Still got those Megadrive/Genesis carts?

It's coming back. Region-free too, so any carts you have should be fine. And all for the price of a current-gen console game.

Hell if I know. Plenty of people seem to derive plenty of enjoyment out of Mame and a plethora of other emulators, so I would assume there must be moderate interest.

I have a great collection of genesis games, its by far my favorite system.

Spent a good two hours yesterday on my Genesis, this is awesome news.

are genesis and mega drive cartriges compatible?

The report says the new systems are region free, so I assume they should play genesis games just fine. AFAIK there was no physical difference.

I seem to remember there was. You physically couldn't plug a Jap cart into a European MegaDrive. Maybe this new console has a slot to accommodate both, though.

i had a jap import when they had that shortage that played uk games fine (some in japanese mind), the plastic casing was physically different but that was it, iir there was a notch or something that physically prevented states games working on uk and perhaps jap machines that or a country chip like the snes
so will we see a rise in price and shortage of availability of mega drive carts in the 2nd hand section of shops that have retro gaming sections now

those tv versons would have been better if they had 2 pads and a cart port, cos they kinda defeated the whole idea of the console and iir they were around the price that the link said, £30ish
ok the whole thing slapped inside a pad is a great idea, till you see the size of the megadrive shaped psu (or was everything inside that?)

It'll be interesting to see whether plugging a Streets Of Rage cart into a region-free Genesis will give you Bare Knuckles or not... I'M IN! :D

Well, Mega Drive and Master System consoles are still sold here in Brazil as a low cost solution. Last time I saw, Mega Drive III came with 96 or so games in its memory without the need for any cartridge.

I loved Ecco the Dolphin and Shining Force.

Wonder what video outputs it'll sport. My friend recently busted out his Genesis, and holy crap I had no idea how inconsistent the video quality on an RF adapter was until he got the thing working on his 46" screen and the flat colours could never stay consistently the same.

the slot on the uk model had a different shape thats it, one of my friend filed his to except jap games.

Wasn't there some sort of *in-between* connector/convertor device that let you plug in Japanese cartridges, at least I thought I remembered seeing something like that at my friend's place which we used to play Street Fighter 2 on (although the Nintendo version was better - and the Korean PC fan-version was good too because you could alter all the special moves as they were all stored in text files hey fireballs for everybody!)
