Windows API for Linux??

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Windows API for Linux??

Has anyone tried this?

Yes, it works reasonably well, most of the games I've tried work, even some they say don't.

(Ubuntu 8.10)

Essentially just Wine.

more WineX than just wine, but yes.

I've found vanilla Wine to be superb lately, even compared to my freely acquired copy of Crossover Games.

On the topic of "Windows APIs for Linux", Mono is another thing that exists. Its main function is a Linux implementation of the .Net magic (gives us beautifully done applications like Banshee and FSpot), but it also just happens to give us support for lots of .Net apps designed for Windows.

Thanks for the replies!

Do any of you recommend a a decent linux destro that wine or mono works well with?

Wine/Cedega/whateverelse:
Linux != Windows. Windows software runs best on Windows. Those compatibility crutches don't make much sense and are a waste of time and money unless you are mostly interested in them for academic reasons or sheer curiosity. Virtual machines are a completely different story, but they are not good enough yet for gaming.

Mono:
Mono is a Novell project. So I presume that SLES or openSuSE should be the best supported Linux distributions. But Mono also runs reasonably well on Mac OS X Leopard (except for the GUI stuff, which looks ugly) and even on FreeBSD. The Mono runtime is also an official part of the Gnome desktop, so --any-- Linux distribution that uses the Gnome desktop by definition also supports Mono out of the box.

Sure they make sense if you hate windows.

I find Wine works with a load of my stuff. And if it don't work you can usually hack it into submission.

Wine etc. makes perfect sense if you have any must-have applications that would otherwise force you to use windows.

Sure, in a perfect world you would be able to run all your software natively under your OS of choice, but fact of the matter is that the vast majority of programs are only released under windows. Without Wine and the likes many people simply wouldn't have the option of using something other that windows because application xyz that they need for their job doesn't work.

(Of course, there's some danger too: Part of the reason OS/2 died a sudden death was because its excellent windows software emulation. Until Windows changed from 16-bit to 32 bit which was NOT compatible with OS/2 so it could no longer keep up. Very few companies had actually bothered to create native OS/2 binaries, so when the windows software went 32-bit the OS/2 users were left in the dust.

Windows software runs best on Windows.
And everything else runs better on linux/unix(osx included) ;P

To be honest, I find the wine-platinum rated ones run about the same, some better even better than on windows. Also a lot of games run just fine, especially if they GL based.

But he is right, Linux!=Windows (fine by me :).
Not tried cadega but i agree with Winni, the basic free "wine" package is more of a desparate man's fix than a serious solution. I assume Cadega offers much more. Although to say its a "waste of time" is a bit harsh, i have found wine useful when i just need to quickly do something windowsey without having to reboot.

Still I prefer linux-native versions of suff as they run far superior on say ubuntu than compared to the windows versions of the exact same software, and this to me is why i use it. I have really not had any problems finding good alternatives to all of my software i use.

Not had any problems with mono on ubuntu either - for running stuff, although for dev, the synaptic version of monodevelop is a quite behind and its a bugger to compile the latest version.

.oops, just pasted an email in here by mistake (long day :O)
