The new Nvidia drivers and BMax

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/The new Nvidia drivers and BMax

I have installed the latest drivers (182.06) from NVidia and found out that they perform terribly in Bmax. My game in development went from 60FPS to 20FPS. The drawing time per loop which was 3-4ms, raised to about 30ms.
It sucks that flawed drivers can cause such major negative impact on 2D (via 3D). I rolled back drivers to previous version, but I doubt that many people will play with drivers, if a 2d game runs badly on their computer.
I have a geforce7300 card which is ok for 2d use.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one... I have a 8400 GS and it always ran my BlitzMax stuff fine.

Now, I can't use the DirectX driver anymore because it just runs too slow. When using OpenGL I get some strange delays. When in my game I accelerate my airplane for the first time the game lags. When I hit the first opponent it lags (showing small explosion) and when I kill the first opponent it lags (bigger explosion). After that it's fine, but it's very annoying.

On another PC with some ATI card I've got no problems and even on my old P4 2,8Ghz with an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 (64mb) card it runs smoothly.

Yeah, this is why I stopped developing in Blitz3D a few years ago. As DX7 becomes older and older, driver manufacturers are going to become less and less careful about breaking it. I'm not suggesting that they've done it on purpose, or don't care, but it stands to reason that it's going to be less and less pressing on their thoughts.

When DX9/10 are out there why cripple drivers with running these. Yeah there are loads of old games that wont run on DX9/10 but that doesnt stop them pressing ahead.

Well, I hope that Blitz Research is aware of this problem and will add a DX9 driver to BlitzMax.

DStatsny has a DX9 module on the way.

What does OGL perform like? Are you using MaxGUI?

Hmm, well I updated my drivers yesterday, and with my game I am still getting >750 FPS in DirectX Windowed mode, and >630FPS in Fullscreen mode.
