HAWX PC demo is now on Steam

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/HAWX PC demo is now on Steam

I played the demo on the Xbox 360, and it was fun. I might get it for the PC, but I've never used Steam before. It says it takes 7gb for installation - how big is the actual download? I don't want to kill my bandwidth..

Probably around 1.5GB for the demo - I haven't finished downloading it yet. I calculate it at around 1.5GB based on the % of transfer.

Probably 7gb. If they do use compression, not much less.

7GB is the full game installation. The demo is The 1.24GB.

Ah, wait a minute. I understand "ubergeek's" question.

The download is the install - Steam installs at it downloads, it is ready to run after download.

Thanks.
The demo is 1.24gb to download. That's not too bad. What about the full game? Or is the 1.24gb include the full game, and if you buy it it unlocks it?
I ask because I think there's only one or two levels out of many in the demo, so conceivably the full version could be ~7gb (which would take several days with my internet speed!).

OMG thats some serious eye candy - surely it is not in game footage? If it is then computers have come a long way.....

Of course it is in-game footage. It looks better than that on my system.

I played it on Xbox 360 as well. I'll get it soon but for what the demo showed me I like Ace Combat 6 a lot more. I don't understand how they think the camera mode for dogfights would help anyone in HAWX....

...I like Ace Combat 6 a lot more.

Me too! I hope they make Ace Combat 7 soon. Oh well, this should help tide me over until then..

The demo is available for direct download from Ubisoft.com too

Christ this game is rubbish!!!

What kills the thing stone dead is that FORCED camera view which makes the whole thing unplayable - I don't even understand what kind of retarded brain thought 'I know, let's force them to sudden play with a 3rd person camera, that is in a fixed position, regardless of the direction of the aircraft'.

HAWX is totally bent.

As far as I know that FORCED camera view is only in the tutorial level? After that you get free control. If not I won't even consider buying it.

I've just seen the demo. As a friend showed it to
me the first thing I asked "just 3rd person view? What the hell is
with the camera?". Then he switched to cockpit mode.

My god!! 3rd person chase cam?!
What a shame a great looking game cant be a real flight sim. The Xbox360 tag should have tipped me off..

A 3D variation of 'Moorhuhn'

Just played the demo...

When using assistance mode you can have first-person mode, but you cant stall... when you turn it off it goes into the weird 3rd person mode, locking onto your target, you can stall and do other moves (apart from fly upside down!?!?)

Its okay.. graphics are great and runs really great, but its an arcade shooter...

Hehe, I quite liked it. I felt like I was playing ASTEROIDS VS TOP GUN. I have no idea what to make of the game, it's a pretty fresh approach to this kind of game, but I can't decide if it's too simplistic.

There's no excuse for the graphics really to be anything other than great. You only have a couple of planes flying about. It's generally some huge texture generated from satelite images, with some 3d buildings chucked in, and some terrain height.

Google earth looks great too ;o)

Played the demo, tutorial level is crap forcing that wierd external view that makes no sense at all. Played the next level and it lets you choose view from cockpit, chase cam and one showing just the hud. Plays alot like the Ace Combat games and in the demo you can unlock 2 more planes by leveling up.

As for the graphics, they look better than that shot when there moving and you have all the effects turned up to maximum but it wasnt as impressive as I was expecting, the planes themselves up close look very very good but the city scape below looks very false as you get down low, it could have looked so much better if they had just added so bumpmapping to the ground textures in the city, as it is the 3d building look like there stuck on a flat plane, but overall it was a fun arcade shooter.

I think playability can be compared with Blazing Angels from Ubisoft. Hope it has less bugs tho.
Looks like a fun game to me but It's not worth 50 Euro's. I just wait untill it's in a weekend sale someday.

Ack, Strem is a ripoff (£34.99) and amazon's price is £17.99

I always liked the stealthy helicopter sims best myself. Does look pretty but airplanes are typically to fast for me. I'd prefer something like wings on the amiga with modern graphics. Balloon shooting and strafing trenches etc.

I prefer flight games set in the World Wars... bi-planes shooting each other, none of this lock on missile stuff...

Games like Knights of the Sky....

It's a solid game. Funny you should mention stealthy helicopter games Ad, I just got done with SkylineBlade for the iPhone ;) Check my blog out to see it.

Does it have padlock view? In other words, the viewpoint is from within the cockpit, but the screen is centred on target.

To me this is the best trade-off between an unrealistic 3rd person view and a rigid straight ahead view as it comes closest to simulating how the pilot would turn their head to track an object. Unfortunately, too many flight/space games seem to think it'd be too disorienting and leave it out.

i haven't played the demo but the graphics look a lot like ace combat 6, maby a little better. after reading the reviews here though, i'm not sure i want to play.

@ therevills, if you have a 360, you should try the ace combat 6 demo and try the missiles. its not easy, and you can just use the guns.

Looks like Google Earth with a plane model on it... isn't there a Google Earth Easter egg that lets you fly a plane in the viewer?

Not much of an easter egg - you can access it from "Tools" -> "Enter Flight Simulator..."

Certainly satellite views, compressed textures and instancing make life much easier for flight sim developers nowadays (and much less impressive for players than a few years ago too).

7 gigabytes? Holy moly.

Got to agree, the forced 3rd person side view is stupid.
