That is a real image of a thingy-bob in space, taken by the Hubble Telescope.

I wonder which computer game will be the first to feature it? Maybe a Blitz game will be first?

These are stunning images. Yeah you could make a game like Gyruss where you fly slowly towards the thingy-bob, rotating along a circle and shooting enemies coming from the bobby-thingie. Or make a shooter and use this thing as an explosion. ;) It's up to you Puki!!

It's an impressive looking image, but that particular image uses false coloring. 'The eye of god' is also known as the Helix Nebula -- Here are some other captures of the exact same thing:











As you can see, there are radically different images -- a lot of these views are artificially colored with completely made-up color schemes since much of the images are actually capture outside of the light spectrum that's visible to humans. Infrared,ultraviolet, gamma rays, etc. A lot of the colors are almost totally arbitrary, and can make things look very different from reality.

This was discovered before 1824 by Karl Ludwig Harding, so I doubt game designers would of missed it, if they were bothered about a nebula.

It is an awesome piece of the universe... No doubt about it... whatever colours they decide to paint it in.

They have to pick SOME artificial coloring, or you wouldn't be able to see and of the info that's outside our visual spectrum at all... But the example picture clearly uses some very wishful thinking to get their 'it looks like an eye' point across. :-?

I'm currently doing a game that uses images of planets, stars, and nebulas in it.

Who knows maybe this will make its way in.

Halfway down the page an image with similar colors can be seen, about which they say it is approximately true color.

I've always been a fan of the Hubble pics and I for one like the "more exciting" versions :) The same stink was raised over the false Mars surface colours used a while back.

D4nM4n: Many of the NASA / ESA images have been released to the public domain. Always double-check if you're going to use one of course, but the odds are good.

So what does it actually look like to the naked eye?

To the naked eye it would be almost completely black -- Pretty much any of those objects require very long exposure times on a camera (as in ~30 minutes or so) because they are so faint in the night sky.

The 4th one down is the most likely for "naked eye" colour. Mostly red due to H-alpha emission with other colours only defined by spectral absorption of surrounding matter.
