People are always very quick to bash Microsoft, and I don't expect this thread to be any exception. However, you have to bear in mind that Microsoft keep updating their software to keep ahead of the game - its only the hacker's determination and dare I say, the stupidity/naiveity of some end-users, that allow these things to spread like they do.
A criminal will find a way into a bank vault if he's determined enough. Fear of getting caught will always be a deterrent to some extent, but hackers generally don't have that fear.

I still contest that anyone trying to `project` something from some `attacker` is themselves `creating` the attacker. In other words, Microsoft, for example, increases the number of hackers in proportion to their security efforts.

It's the same thing I understood. It's not like malware authors are digitalized as in Tron and you need hackers to get them. :)

unless they are stupid enough to have told their mates about it then you pretty much do. What is the EXACT definition of a "hacker" anyway? If i find a password in a dustbin and use it i have hacked in. If i do a messy code mod to a program i have written a hack by hacking. Tracking down people internationally (foreign ISPs dont usually just give up info) requires a bit of "skill" too i imagine.If i break your firewalls and look for evidence on your drives or even smash the door down take your box back to the police lab i also have to "hack" it to get what i want.
Do people really think the top security professionals (at least the ones who are equal or ahead in the field) learned that stuff being well behaved college boys and all have clean noses? I wouldnt be surprised if half the FBI's computer crime division are not caught hackers on "deals", or have a history they simply don't discuss. :P
I would call it more detective work than hacking. The fact that you sift through electronic databases as well as papers one doesn't make much of a difference nowadays. Often the term hacking refers to an illegal breach of a system: reading trashed documents is not illegal (just unethical), modifying executables is often against the EULA (but not necessarily the law of your state), but breaking a firewall or smashing a door definitely gets you to the other side of the fence.
That's not uncommon; if it was the ego that led you to go for such a goal, it would most probably push you into telling someone else about it. However, these days viruses are often written by criminal organizations, and that's another field of investigation altogether.

Well you say that, but the German guys who developed "Sasser" were caught and jailed after Microsoft offered a reward. Conversely, I think they offered a reward for the developers of MyDoom too, and they didn't get caught. Still, people will do a lot of things for $250k

Often hacking refers to something totally different from unauthorized access.
On topic, most of the malware authors seem to be from east Europe. At least that's how it used to be. $250,000 is very big money in many of those countries. If it isn't a lone person, someone may very well sell them off.
