Wii sells 'crappy games'

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Wii sells 'crappy games'

I've always thought this about Nintendo's home consoles since about the release of N64, but it seems it is now officially.

If Nintendo didn't make games for their own consoles, why would anyone ever buy one?

The problem with that whole report, is that the people reviewing many of the Wii games aren't the ones actually buying and playing them. Those reviewers are hardcore and don't enjoy casual games in the same way that many Wii owners would.

The Wii is a very different beast to the XBox360 and PS3. You really can't compare them. They cater for very different markets.

Unfortunately, Nintendo's former hardcore crowd, the people that have been paying their wages (ie me) over the whole of Nintendo's life are being let down by the lack of games for them. I haven't really touched my Wii much since getting my Xbox360, but I'll happily abandon that for a while to play the next Zelda or Metroid release etc.
But the stuff that I wouldn't go near, friends and family would. Doesn't make them wrong, just means their needs and tastes are different.

Those crappy games are selling, so someone wants them.

Just because reviewers and analysts says it so, doesn't make it so.

I'd agree that for the most part the only people who make decent games for Nintendo consoles are Nintendo. Third party titles have always tended to be "crappy" shovelware.

There are exceptions to the rule, of course, but I suspect that most Nintendo consoles gather dust between the releases of the Zelda, Mario, WiiGimmick (etc.) first party titles.

man that article is terribly written. The guy is just all over the map, I cannot tell what his message is or what is the point of his article. At first it sounds like he is criticizing Wii, but by the end it sounds more like a defense of game reviewers.

I do think the Wii does have a big problem with it's games library, there are less than 10 games that are actually worth buying, that's a big problem and depending on your taste you will probably only like 7 or 8 of them.

For me the Wii is very much a secondary console that has some fun titles but I couldn't have it as my only gaming device. My 360 on the other hand pretty much does the business and the PC has dropped away (-31% this year in the UK) as the 360 takes up the slack (now outselling the PC by 9x):

That's just your opinion, not necessarily the opinion of most Wii owners. ;)

I feel the same about the PS3, to ME there are only a couple of games worth buying, but that isn't necessairly true for others.

At the moment the Wii is the best selling console, selling the most games/apps. So it's obviously not as crappy to those purchasing it or the games. So it'sdoing something right, whether the reviewers or analysts think it's crappy or not.

Do you know how many wiis were sold over christmas. Obviously people like it. It is not as crappy as you think. That is just your opinion.

SpaceMan94: Who was that aimed at?

I own a Wii and was defending it against the rather poor comments about supposed "crappy" software.

Oh sorry I was kinda aiming that one towards ENAY because wii is not 'crappy'!

That's flawed logic, SpaceMan95

For many parents, at least, the motivation behind buying a Wii at Christmas would have been to give a bit of fun and pleasure during the Christmas holidays to the kiddie-winks and visiting friends and family. Such consumers wouldn't take into account, or care about, or even know anything about, the scarcity of quality back catalogue titles.

And, yes, of course someone who loves Wii Fit or Zelda or Mario will like their console. That isn't the issue. The issue is, once they've played and enjoyed the handful of quality core games that they initially bought their console to play, what then?

I do admit that the wii does have crappy graphics compared to 360 and ps3

At least the wii is stopping people being couch potatoes.Get up and boogie

Indeed, if you compare console's sold for the wii, and games sold for the wii, there is a huge difference. People buy the console, then it gets used very rarely afterwards, a bit like a toy. I think that's the difference. The wii is considered a toy, where-as the xbox and the ps3 are considered gaming machines, you can stick with for a while.

Wii doesn't sell 'crappy' games, just casual games.

I have a Wii and I love it. Some of my games are crappy (as in, I think they are boring and/or they irritates me when I play them for various reasons) but I also have a bunch of great games (as in, games I enjoy playing)

I don't care if someone says that Wii games are crap. A lot of Xbox360 and PS3 games are crap too. It really depends on who you ask.

Wii has family/casual games and ps3/360 has action/war games.

Nintendo's former hardcore crowd, the people that have been paying their wages (ie me) over the whole of Nintendo's life are being let down by the lack of games for them.

Over the whole of Nintendo's life? The company was founded in 1889! Nintendo is no more intrinsically tied to hardcore gaming than it was tied to playing cards or is now tied to the casual market.

Crappy games or not, they are laughing all the way to the bank.

As a Wii owner myself, I will say that it's gotten considerably less usage since the Xbox 360 entered the household. But there is no denying that it has opened the market up to a large audience.

People I know that have never had an interest in games are really enjoying their Wii's. If anything it will hopefully be a nice "starter" machine and mature the tastes of those just discovering games for the first time.

LOL, I have a Wii, theres good games, some not so good games - same as every other platform.

My nephew who's 10 loves the Wii and thesilly games :)

There are also some really great games in the Wii Library that no one 'recognizes', like Metal of Honor Heroes 2, which is a fantastic online shooter.

But a lot of people discount the Wii too quickly because of its reputation, and it takes a little getting used to, especially for shooters.

I think it could be a hardcore system (not every game HAS to use the directional sensors) but it has such a reputation as a casual machine that no one would invest in it. Another reason is because it has less graphical capabilities, and since eye candy is so important in hardcore games.

Being a big Nintendo fan since the NES, I think the quality of their
games has gone straight downhill since they went 3D with the N64.

Sure there have been some great games for the N64,GameCube, and
Wii, but there have been far too few great games :(

Back in the days of the SNES, you could buy any game and almost
always be assured of getting your moneys worth.

Now you have to do some careful research before buying any game,
afraid to waste 50$ on a cheap piece of junk.

My personal opinion on the Wii's popularity, is simply that people love
the motion sensitive gimmick, and tend to overlook the quality, or lack
there of, of the games.

I think the Wii is more aimed towards young kids, who would certainly
find it a blast. But sadly, hardcore gamers like me feel unappreciated :(
And I'm stuck spending 70$ on a used copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga
on Ebay, since all the new games are trash :(

WERDNA(Hard Core Gamer To The End)

The NPD numbers scared the hell out of me.

Wii Play?!
Wii Play?!
WTF? We're all doomed :(

I think it's a real shame that Little Big Planet is nowhere to be found on these lists. I was playing with it a while ago (I don't own a PS3 either) and it was really cool.
I hope the developer can (and has the sense to) put the game on a platform where it can get the attention it deserves.

Wii Play is only the most successful game for the Wii because it costs less than buying a normal Wiimote comes with a free Wiimote. So most people buy it just to get the controller; and hey look you got some kids party games too! I bought Wii Play for this exact reason shortly after buying my Wii.

I would guess this anomly is caused by Nintendo allowing heavy discounting by merchants for software while they probably have fixed price agreements for official Nintendo Wii Hardware.

DS sales are diminishing all the time due to the fact that ~80-90% of people who own a DS now also own an R4DS or similar device.

That number isn't just for the Wii, though. That's globally.

Which also makes me wonder: How many controllers do people need?!
Wasn't one of the ideas that people can sort of have their own personal controllers that they can take with them?

Only thing I've seen that makes use of the Remote's 4kb of onboard storage (iirc) was just your Mii, and so far, that's about it.

Regarding the 'crappy games' thing, it's true. Even if it's not at the hardcore audience, a lot of the 'casual' games being spilled out left and right are of abysmal quality 75% of the time. Things that'd look bad even by N64 standards.
