When Looking For A Game Artist...

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/When Looking For A Game Artist...

What do you look for on websites, portfolios, etc?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm about to revamp my website to be more of an online portfolio for myself. I've spent the last 8/9 months focusing on improving my 3d modeling and texturing (that's on top of the previous 4 years using 3ds max and photoshop) and I think I have just about enough work to build a small portfolio with.

Here is my current my website:

Far from what it needs to be, I know. The last game was added just before I started concentrating on artwork. So, what sort of things do you think I should include/exclude in my new site?

John

Exclude the google ads - they're rarely anything to do with what's on your site, and when they are, they're promoting your competitors.

Get rid of the Times font. It looks cheap and suggests that with it being the default font, you couldn't be bothered to change it.

Don't have it black.

Better font choices, hopefully no underlined links, and less google ads! (although I know not everyone thinks they're bad for portfolio sites, for some strange reason)

Take a look at the artist sites over at the indiegamer forums. You'll get lots of idea there... but if I were going to hire an artist, I'd be looking for general pricing and a good writeup of their skillset.

Okay, google ads are going (was going to do that anyway).

Any suggestions for a nice font and colour scheme?

Something simple... non-serif. To build a decent colour scheme, aside from experimenting (which is always a good way to learn about colour), try something like Tiger Color. Also, have a look at Smashing Magazine for some inspiration :)

Thanks for the links. I'll see what I can do ;-)
