Fatal Inertia EX vs Wipeout HD
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Fatal Inertia EX vs Wipeout HD
One for the PS3ers here (yeh, I know, all two or three of you)
There's posts about this elsewhere on the net but feature just a bunch of ppl saying Fatal Inertia is 'crap' which doesn't really tell me much.
I've played the demo of both games and from my experience I enjoyed Fatal Inertia better so I'd like to know if anyone has any thoughts on why Wipeout kicks its butt.
From what I understand, Wipeout has trophies, better (working?) net support and 'prettier' graphics. Apart from Wipeout being 1080p I thought Fatal Inertia was more aesthetically pleasing.
Any thoughts on the actual gameplay differences?
If I had a PS3 I'd definitely check them out as I've been a wipeout fan since the first one, in fact it made me buy a PS1.
wipeout 1 and 2 were the only ones I ever liked. They got a bit too simplistic and easy later on. Havent tried these ps3 games though.
I liked the second one 2097 XL the best.Had by far the most rewarding controls and nnnnnot so forgiving and no dumb collisions where you could go straight through large trees like in one of the later games I tried
I played both demos too, and I opted for Wipeout HD (without hesitation). The developers appear to have returned to the winning formula that made the originals great (I wasn't a fan of the anything post Wipeout 2097)!

I tried the demo, and thought the same.
Didn't bother trying Wipeout, since I'm assuming it's a similar kind of game.

The are only similar in so far as they are both "racing" games. The similarities end there (playability wise especially).
I found the IGN review of "Fatal Inertia" to be fair and accurate:

The original starwars racer was a lot of fun for some quick thrills. Shame the ones that cam after were all rubbish.
Hmm thanks Milky Joe. Reviews. It never even occurred to me.
The main thing that Wipeout had over Fatal Inertia for me is that Fatal Inertia has extremely convoluted and confusing level design. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of having multiple paths and everything, but the signs which show you the general direction are often obscured by other parts of the level geometry, and there's just generally too much going on to really get a grip on where I'm going. I appreciate that all racing games are somewhat about learning the courses, but FI just makes learning the courses a real chore.
I agree about FI being the better looking game though.
Have since played the demo of Wipeout Pulse for PSP and the game plays quite well, so maybe I was overly harsh on Wipeout HD. Will have to muck around some more.
i had a similar thing when quake 3 and unreal tournament demos came out way back when
sure quake had the linerage (as does wipeout) but i had issues against quake bots and their insecent jumping, so when it came to buying one or tother i plumped for unreal and didnt regret it
Well, in your case Unreal was clearly the standout game of the two anyway =]
Played the demo of Fatal Inertia last night and must admit that I did not get on with it at all. It felt like an indie release to me and lacked polish. It also reminded me of Rollcage - just with hovercraft instead of wheeled vehicles.
Wipeout HD is far more enjoyable, easier to get into and far more polished - but then, it has had 10+ years to get it right.
Yeh I don't know, it got it pretty right with the first release. Not much has changed since then!
