Extra second onto the year

As 2008 closes, apparently folks celebrating the close of the year in some quarters will have to count 3.... 2.... 1.... 1.... Happy New Year due to the fact we need an extra second added on to make up for how the world spins these days. Its not often you'll here folks counting in the new year like that - whats a second between friends!

Blitzplotter are you sure? I thought all these missing seconds each day was what made up the leap year day every 4 years?
It always baffles me that there is a happy new year in every time zone, so like 24 time zones. SO like Japan lives in the future and America is furthest in the past (spookily almost reality actually)

But I mean if you lived in outerspace, what time is it really? Time makes no sense way up there. Or whatabout if you travelled backwards around the globe in your super speed aircraft at the speed of 'once around the world in 24 hours', it'd be the strike of midnight and happy new year every second of the day, and when does it start or end? :)

He's correct. Although instead of saying "1" twice, they just started the countdown a second later. Cunning.

I'm quite sure that was Superman, which was fictional. :)

superman was real but all the supervillans banded together against the super heroes and defeated them in 1986 and rebooted the world making us forget (wanted the comic not movie)

if you REALLY want a good newyears wouldnt magnetic north be best?
i mean all the timezones converge at the poles so walk around a bit and it wont be long till its midnight again :)

@ENAY, I think you'd have to pace yourself - get a plane that goes that little bit faster enough to let you slow down say every 30 mins, I'm sure that way you could successfully celebrate (Am i being to greedy ?} 47/48 times thorughout the 24 hours. You could of course do it virtually, but I'm sure everyone agrees that is a cop-out.
