Most of the PC versions have been captured at a much higher resolution in order to make them look better than the other two.

It's a pointless comparison -- sitting at a desk is never going to beat lounging on a sofa.

I think you are mistaking supersampling antialising with a higher resolution. For example the masked textures for bushes and trees in Fallout 3 are smooth due to supersampling, not scaling.

Take a look at this comparison:

EDIT: but hey, even if it was the case, with a PC you can have a higher res so it would still be fair... Sony bragged about HD support for the PS3 for ages! :)

Agree with GFK, it says on the piece that they captured the Console shots at 720P and the PC images at 1080P.

1080P looks better than 720P, big surprise.

The only way to test this properly is do double blind trials using the same 1080P screen for each game and have people pick without knowing the source.

I would actually be interested to see a decent size sample of this for Upsacled DVD vs Blu Ray as I strongly suspect that most people can't tell the difference (I've found most Blu Ray movies I watched looked the same as upscaled DVD to watch, from 5-6 feet away, seen on the same screen).

But.. but.. I invested a couple of grand in my PC. I have to find some way to convince myself that it wasn't a waste of money and that I couldn't be playing the same games looking virtually identical with a £100 Xbox. I already discount the cost of half of the necessary components so that I can claim I only really spent a grand. If I can't use low res console shots and high res PC shots to stack the deck, what else can I do?

I did notice in the Fallout 3 shots that the level of detail on the PS3 drops quite rapidly with distance, compared to the Xbox 360 and PC shots.

Having become quite addicted to Fallout 3 over the past couple of weeks, I have to say the Xbox 360 version plays a lot better than the PC version.

Isnt the point that the pc was capable of running at a usable speed at 1080p? I notice that the pc one seems to always have much better contrast/gamma.

PC cant be all good, i hated Grid yet x360 people say its great.

Wish they'd at least adjust the gamme so they're all of the same level of brightness. PS3 is consistently darker than both PC and 360 in their screengrabs.

Anyhow, it looks like the pS3 got the shit-end of the stick for the majority of titles, but it's all minute details and stuff you wouldn't notice anyhow without said comparisons, so it's not much an issue for me.
(beats dealing with the compatibility/bugs crap I have to deal with PC ports anyhow)

I hated grid too, it just looked cool but drove like rubbish. Kind of like a sledge with a 6x4 you ram into the ground to change direction. A good sports car should have close to 50:50 balance and rotate roughly around where your shift knob is, not somewhere in the middle of the engine right between the wheels.

It's a totally unrealistic game that looks very exciting.

Fallout 3 doesn't need a high end PC. my 3000+ Geforce 7800 plays it very well at 1024x640 maxed out graphics. Plus your pc can always be plugged into the TV too and usually has higher res textures and less draw in.

Agreed with the gamma issue. You can't begin to make a comparison with different brightness everywhere.

The gamma issue was probably exacerbated by the fact that the only way to get a screengrab from an Xbox or PS3 is to pipe the video through a capture device. You just use software to grab from PC.

Surely we're intelligent enough to see past gamma issues when comparing screenshots? Please tell me we are, or we've no business being programmers.

But the point is, a 360 costs £160 whereas a PC capable of running those graphics playably costs 5-10 times that amount or even more.

They all looked pretty much the same to me. With some minor exceptions I really didn't notice any ground breaking differences. Those screenshots wouldn't make me want to play it on a system other than a PC, though. I just prefer my mouse and keyboard over a joystick.

Nuff said.

I hate controllers.

Hmm.. I wonder why. Probably because a PC doesn't JUST run games.

$400 will buy you a mobo, cpu, ram and GPU thats several times better than a 360 here. It's just whether you like the exclusive games that may not make it to the PC.

Two times that figure instead of 5-10 is more realistic.

Granted, however with the PS3 version of Fallout 3 I can't understand clearly if some detail maps are absent of just less apparent... one thing for sure, the PS3 has only antialiasing x2 differently from the other versions. Apart from that it's difficult to understand if most changes depend just on different camera angles when dealing with specular and bump mapping: it's more like guessing than anything else.

not forgetting that they did or still do sell consoles for a loss, you could get an xbox with cornflakes coupons if they wanted you to have one ... theyd probably just up the price of games or developer licence fees to reap it all back
