Not very useful for casual game developers though. I'd love for BFG or Reflexive to have this kind of data available to the public.

Awesome!

The best public available stats for casual games are the ones provided from the Unity webplayer.

I somehow would expect pure portal stats beeing slightly better than that but for sure they aren't compareable to the steam stats at all. This falls more into the category wishthinking.

Huh. I found this tidbit the most surprising among that that list of specs: ~25% of all widescreen users supposedly a display of 27" or larger.
That does make me think that these stats aren't really representative of the more casual computer users. I would have expected the cheapo 17-19" widescreens to be much more common otherwise, and same for the 15.4" laptop screens

Anyway, something important to know for us casual developers: they don't break down the numbers explicitely, but if you look at the stats for the primary display resolutions and add up the numbers you'll see that 39.62% of the computers surveyed are using a widescreen monitor.
That number by itself clearly illustrates that you should do some serious considerations in supporting widescreen resolutions in your games... If not, up to ~40% of your players could have a sub-par experience with either stretched graphics or unused screenspace.

The unity ones will be slightly more biased towards people using mac's though.

You didn't read the stats or understood them, right?!

a) Currently the stats are based on 97% Windows and 3% OSX.
b) All entries are seperated for each OS as well.
