Optical illusions aren't always good.

I was creating some graphics for a project I'm working on and i keep running into a certain optical illusion which I don't want. They aren't always good you know!



The darkened bit just above halfway isn't actually darker than below. It gradients from dark (bottom) to light(top) all the way up. It's just because the gradient isn't smooth I guess?

I'm trying to type into the reply box but it has a strange metal bar in it.

Wow, nice trick. I don't even understand how it is we see it any differently. An inconsitant gradient is all I would be able to think of, there's no crosshatching or anything either.

What happens if you do the same thing except have the middle gradient sections switched around?

I think that it is due to the fact that the gradient changes smoothly from the top down at every line and then stays the same value for a while before smoothly changing again. Like Hotcakes says, an inconsistant gradient. In other words, if the gradient was evenly spaced throughout then the problem wouldn`t occur.

That sure is pretty weird. I can see what you're talking about. If you play with the image by scrolling your eyes from top to bottom, at one point it appears consistent. Then the bar reappears. I wonder if the problem only occurs on an LCD monitor?

Put it in paint if you don't believe it!
