Doesn't surprise me, there are tons of British developers working over here. When over half a million british citizens leave the UK a year you expect a big chunk of those to be educated professionals going where the pay is higher, taxes and cost of living are far lower.
Go down to one of the local British pubs in my area and they are often packed with expats. Especially if there's a big tournament on.
Hell if I had the money I would emigrate to another country, the UK is a really terrible country to live in. We are taxed on everything.

Depends which port it comes into. Cos to dump it in the atlantic you'd probably need to hire a lorry, or settle for the north sea/english channel/irish sea. :)

Heh, Imagine earning £100,000. Currently the labour party is planning to phase out personal allowance in 2010. So everyone earning over $40k will still pay 40% but if you earn over 100k it will jump to 60%.
The reason all our celebrity movie stares etc moved abroad in the 60's and 70's was the super high taxes back then. Looks like those are coming back.

I work over in Czech Republic. Not 'computer' related as such but I do enjoy this country far more than living in the UK
The most noticable difference being in general quality of life. The UK is just so depressing. Neighbours don't talk, everybody seems to be miserable, no prospects, expensive cost of living, over-populated, too many petty rules and regulations, and high crime rates
The police 'service' is now beyond a joke with 16 year old community police(!) doing the rounds

On the other hand, Vancouver apparently gets about 45 inches of rain a year (almost twice as much as London) and 16 inches of snow...

Canada is a handsome country with friendly people, a.o. i stayed in Montreal for some time. Quite a change once you cross the border to the USA.

No, they changed it. As you drive down the M8 now, there's a huge billboard with "WELCOME TO GLASGOW" written on it, with a picture of John Smeaton punching a burning man.

I'll admit there's much to dislike about the UK, but... can I just point out the falsehoods that people seem to have about UK tax. The Top rate is 45% not 60, and you only pay that after £100k.
Another belief is that you pay the full Tax rate according to what you earn. You don't. There are a thing called thresholds based on 0%,20%,40% and 45%,
If you earn 120k you pay 45% on only 20k, 40% on 60k, and 20% on 32k, and 0% on 6k = 39k about 30% total.
Yes there's also NI, but if you earn £120k you'll have an accountant and will pay very little on that also.

I have never been to the UK, but the impression I get mostly from those who come over from UK and from the personalities I meet online and what not is that they (UK Natives) are very bitter and negative people. It's usually a love hate thing from what I observed where they can complain so much about so many things but when it comes time to bashing another country (US perhaps) they tend to get on the "Pro UK Bandwagon"....
Having never lived there myself (let alone visited), I can only base my opinions and assumptions about what those who live there say. Thus far, I doubt I'd ever be interested in visiting outside of a short business related venture or perhaps to take in the sights....
I'll be going back to China next year. I can't wait. I much prefer living there to living here in the UK.

China isn't Communist, Flameduck. Or I should say, it is but in name only. It's a
great place to live. As long as you're not a peasant. Or ill. Neither of which I am.
Just depends where in the UK you live. I grew up in a really nice part of Haslemere near guildford. And California generaly seems like a third world country in comparison. There is some nice scenery if you get off the beaten track and away from the freeways though.
It's more lonely here though because people don't stick in one place and families tend to not be together, and no one knows anyone. Most of my facebook buddies are from Haslemere and the surrounding area, and about 30 of them I have known since I was about 12 years old, 24 years ago.
The vast majority still live in and around the area, whereas here in the US everyone moves around and you lose touch, so friendships tend to be more like acquaintances and often come about through work.
I do live in a nice area here in California though, and thanks to walking my dogs twice a day, I do get to meet a lot of neighbours, wouldn't really call any of them friends, even if we do have coffee and dinner at one anothers houses and hold the occasional street party.

Actually I gotta stick up for the UK, I lived in Bridport, Dorset on the South Coast and it was a a great little town, lots of friendly people, good art scene, 1 mile from the beach, lovely countryside all around. I liked it. I didn't move because it was bad, just for a "change", a different experience. I'd like to go back one day (I still have a house there). I think some of the problem in the UK may be living in some cities to be honest...
You might be right, but there's a lot to dislike about modern English culture. A lot to dislike.
Depends who you hang out with and if you bother to watch TV and read the paper or not (I suggest not as it fills your mind with crud).
Not if you have critical faculties, an awareness of fallacies, and the ability to think logically. Unfortunately, whether or not one chooses to hang out with England's legions of p*ss heads, chavs, jingoistic ultra-nationalists, and soccer bores, they still exist. Perhaps I'm just not in sync with popular culture.
I'm just saying it's easier to avoid that stuff full stop that waste time taking it into your brain and evaluating it.

Grey points a good one, I used to bother about current affairs a lot, had an interest in it you could say. Used to do the broadsheets - these days they are more like broadshites. £1 for a copy of the independent... I maybe buy 2 papers a week now for the gossip - generally steer clear of evaluating stuff thats way out of your control. Life s better for it.
Back on thread, I think Spains temperatures dip to almost single figures this time of year Brrrr - this morning I'd to de-ice two cars before going to work.
There is a lot of good about the U of K, Scotland for instance has scenery reminiscent of Austria - so has Wales for that matter - if only you are prepared to go looking for it.

The UK (and in fact - anywhere) is a hotbed of creativity when politics and society are at their lowest! Make the most of it and get up and at 'em :) Take Thatcher's years - people moaned back then too, yet Sinclair, Amstrad, Sega and Nintendo thrived in those years bringing us gaming as we know it today. Bring on more taxes I say!
