Uniengine demo - tropic isle
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Uniengine demo - tropic isle
Nice engine demo available from here;
http://unigine.com/download/can run under DX9/10/OpenGL
Guess the closest we have is Leadwerk's Island demo...
I have try it..its ok but quite slow on my 8800GT and i wasnt set high details...engine is really expensive and having said that, its really not my cup of tea...very slow...i guess 8800GT is obsolete or something....im wondering what this guys aiming for...not many rigs will be able to Chew this smoothly...
wow :)
The demo seems too slow for the amount of content it displays. I think Leadwerks Engine would run this scene at 200 FPS, while unigine runs at 24 FPS.
Engine sucks.
I've only run under OpenGL (1680x1050, ATI HD4850 512mb) and framerates do drop to single digits in places.
I like the open ocean though - looks like deepwater!
I think Leadwerks Engine would run this scene at 200 FPS, while unigine runs at 24 FPS.
Well you may think it, but I tested it a couple of weeks ago, and the truth is quite the opposite. I ran this demo on my 8600GTS and could get better framerates with everything max'ed out than I could get with the Leadwerks Island demo with everything on minimum. Now I'll grant you that the scenes are not identical, but I would say this demo looks better and higher detail than the Leadwerks Island demo as well as being much faster.
@Gabriel: Hmm, that's wierd because the LE Island demo runs on my 8800 GTS at 70 FPS. I can only imagine that you don't have the newest OpenGL drivers, and ran the Unigine demo in DirectX mode.
I do have the latest drivers. As for the Unigine Demo, I tried both DirectX and OpenGL and found performance to be just about identical in both.
Why does it matter how it runs - have you checked the prices?
$15000 + $35000 upon release???
Then it must be so that lower-ended cards than 8800 GTS cards run OpenGL much slower than 8800 GTS. I have an Asus G2X laptop also with a 8600M, and it's slow as hell with OpenGL.

That could be, but they're both using OpenGL, and the Leadwerks demo has much worse performance.
Like I said, Leadwerks Engine has much better performance on my 8800 GTS than the Unigine engine, so it must be that the 8800 has some hardware features which the 8600 doesn't have. Leadwerks Engine is using a lot of hardware functions, so it will be slow on hardware which doesn't support the required features.
Yeah... don't quote me on this, but I think Leadwerks was targeting the 8800 as minimum spec for all the bells and whistles.
That sounds quite accurate. The 8800 GTS is like the minimum card to perform well with all bells and whistles, however the Island demo (which is quite a stress test), runs well also on a 7600 GT (I tested on my father's PC). I don't know what problems the 8600 GT has, could be that Gabriel is using Vista, which would explain that everything runs 10 times slower than on XP SP3.
on my 7600GT Island demo going frame by frame...it is 7600GT on 2.4 ghz CPU with 1 Gig RAM, WinXP, Latest drivers..checked..and somehow i got feeling that new engines, called 'next gen with bells and whistles', going to be a major disapointment on indie scene..
Now that's interesting, same hardware, same OS, maybe a little less memory (1GB vs 2GB). But the LE Island demo should definately run well on a 7600 GT. Unless your term "frame by frame" means more than 1FPS. I think 15 FPS is still good, as I played Crysis with that rate, and there was no lag at all, it was very smooth.
when i said frame by frame, it was about 10-12 fps maximum..and to me its not something I consider playable fps..and i havent set maximum setting..it was very minimum..but again..if it is aimed to be like 15 fps on such configuration then i guess its okay..by the way, 7600GT we should consider low end newdays then(PS3 GPU is by the way, kind a 7600GT)..
I'd like to retry the Leadwerks sandbox demo again, but it's telling me it has expired.
Given that it was glitchy on my ATI card to begin with (I want to see if its been improved) and had limited capability, I find this a bit irritating.
..you are looking for new engine Madjack?
This isn't even 1/10th the size of the island in our demo.
..you are looking for new engine Madjack?
I think so - it's worthwhile moving to BlitzMax for TU2, but that leaves open the question of a new 3d engine...
I like the Leadwerks engine for its apparent ease of use and Blitz3d similarities but am not convinced about its reliability. Having been at the sharp end of providing tech support for a Steam released game, this is very important to me.

Then leadwerks is not the right engine, it still doesn't support ATI cards.
Unfortunately AMD just released drivers with another bad bug. They're trying to implement Shader Model 4, but not doing a very good job of it, so I just disabled the SM4 features on AMD cards in the next version. Until their final OpenGL 3 drivers are out (Q1 2009) I will have to follow their drivers pretty closely and work around whatever new bugs they create.
Well, that's part of the job writing an engine for a real world scenario.
Sometimes I wish Farcry hadn't come out. I mean it was refreshing for once to play a FPS (if a mediocre one) in something that wasn't a greyish/brown industrial/sewer complex for a change. Sadly it seems one of the things in short supply by creative people is creativity, because Tropical Islands seem to be the new "benchmark", *yawn*. Here's an idea: You want people to go all WOW over your new engine? Show us something we haven't seen already 100 times before!
Well, it's not only OpenGL that has problems with ATI drivers:
http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=279&threadid=102854 Hello,
I have a AMD ATHLON 64 FX 3200+ with 2GB RAM and a new Powercolor ATI RADEON HD 4850 512MB DDR3 and Windows XP Professional with service Pack 3.
I have downloaded the latest drivers from catalyst (not the HOT FIX for Far Cry 2 and STALKER). With this, both games Crysis and far Cry 2 run great with perfect graphic details. When I update CRYSIS (not WARHEAD that I also have) to verson 1.2 and the 1.2.1 the game RUNS SLOW and... all graphics are GARBAGE - ALL!
If I install the HOTFIX from ATI for Far Cry 2 and STALKER, far Cry 2 does not simply DISPLAY a single GRAPHIC on screen. The Main menu does not appear and the game neither. The only thing that shows is the game presentation (UBI SOFT logo and next small animations), nothing more.
What the HELL is happening here? May be the drivers incompatible with new CRYSIS version 1.2.1 and also the HOTFIX incompatible with Far Cry 2 (even if it was made for it)?
HELP, PLEASE.
@FlameDuck
Hmm FarCry was a great game and i also liked the gameplay. Actually i don't mind if people make one island demo after the other as it's at least easy to compare them with each other then. From a wow factor i would say you should try to make it better or more unique than what has been done before or head for something new.
.....15,000$+35,000$??
Are you kidding me? And they don't even support you for over 6 months. And you only get updates for one or two years.
I'd rather buy a fancy car.
Leadwerks Engine is a low-risk engine when you look at the price tag: $150.00.
Would make a nice Christmas present.
I think the Island demo is ok too. It's pleasant and you can compare like taumel says.
Sad, really sad....
I ran this on my P4 3.0 Ghz, 2GB Ram, Geforce 7800GT OC and it gave me 10 fps at 800x600...
I went native res and I got 12 fps at max (with stuff turned down). Very unimpressed!
Sure, one can claim that technology is screaming past my old rig however that small island seemed so un-optimized I mean I was out in deep water, looking at nothing but water and sky on the horizon and I still got 16 fps max....
Nah, my fault... :O)
