Wireless networks

Hi, I just got my Samsung NC10 netbook.

On turning it on it claims to have found a wireless network within range of the computer.

I don't have wireless.

Is this perhaps a neighbour's wireless service? Or is it normal for this type of device to claim it found a wireless service?

It'll be a neighbour's and you may get it trouble if you use it, unless they have openly declared it to be publicly accessible.

I'll have to Google on how to use their connection without them knowing.

This will save me getting my own wireless or bothering to plug in my USB modem and install my ISPs software.

I will just play dumb and say that it was my first netbook computer (which is true) and I thought it was like my PocketSurfer 2 which uses GPRS mobile phone antennas.

Most Wireless networks are (and should be unless they are public) encrypted which will prevent you from actually using the network even though you can "see" it. Generally encryption is better than no encyrption.

WEP is better than nothing (but trivial to break).
WPA is much better than WEP (and very common)and can be considered pretty safe, despite a few concernes of WPA+TKIP.
WPA+AES and/or WPA2 is the best option but only compatible with newer equipment.
For large business 802.11X and Radius is the way to go.

I'm afraid your being rather hypocritical here puki. Your the first to complani if someone pirates blitz, yet your stealing someone's bandwidth via wireless connection. :P

I haven't touched it yet - I'm too busy installing and testing stuff.

I was just more surprised that my new NC10 found a wireless network.

May go out with it tomorrow and see what wireless networks I can find.

Still on the PocketSurfer 2? Not upgraded to the 2R?

The year ran out on the PS2 - I haven't bothered to renew it - probably won't now that I have my NC10

I got it all running on my laptop and went out for a walk down 3 streets and looks at it when I got home. I found 36 wifi networks and 13 unsecured ones.

You should have watched CBC The National last night. They were describing how to do exactly that.

Installing a modem takes much less time than googleing for stealing someones wireless connection. Sometimes you talk like a 10 year old who thinks stealing something is "badass" and "cool".

Is there any chance we can get a moderator to enforce the rules and put an end to the personal attacks (like the above) that this guy continually makes?
