I have a domain with Brinkster and it's due to expire in a couple of months, and I want to use a different company. If I allow it to expire, is it then easy to register the domain with a different company, or do I have to go through lots of malarkey with new DNS addresses and transfer requests etc? I've never transferred a domain before...

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/domain name transfer - help? In my experience with domain names, almost all domain name registrars are owned by somebody who's "brother" makes it their business to register expired domains and ransom it back to you.
If you really want to keep the domain then you'll need to either renew it with the same lot or use the transfer service.
You can guarantee that if your registrars brother doesnt try and ransom it out to you, then my registrars brother will pick it up and do the same...

Transferring a domain isn't hard, but if the company you're with are idiots, they could make it take weeks, start as soon as you can.
Yep, much easier to just transfer it now. Normally when you transfer a domain, the new domain service will give you a deal on renewing anyway. It can take days or even weeks to get a transfer through.
If you let it expire, you can bet that someone else will snatch it up and steal it form you. Possibly even your current domain service.

Transfer it before it expires, it is not difficult, you should even be able to get your new company to handle the transfer for you if your lucky.

My current service is Brinkster, anyone got any experience with them? They're a decent enough service, I just get charged for overseas transactions and they're in the US while I'm in the UK...
Your current registrar should have documentation which explains all that. The receiving registrar should also have documentation available.
Somewhere in the account information for the domain, there should be a transfer code. Sometimes the registrar will openly list this code so that you only need to be logged in to view it. Some registrars may require you to request this code from them by some means. Make sure you keep this code secure.
If the domain is locked at your current registrar, you will need to unock it to allow the transfer.
Once you have this transfer code for the domain; login to the new registrar and look for a page in your account interface that will be used for transferring domains from another registrar. You will need to enter the transfer code on that page, or at some later point in the transfer process.
Once you have initiated the transfer process, you will get an email from the original registrar which will include some validation requirement that you will need to act on to approve the transfer. This email is sent to the email address you have listed in your domain's registrant contact details - so make sure that information is up to date. If you have whois protection for the domain, the email will still get sent to you.
Once you've approved the transfer, all you should have to do is wait for the domain to appear in your account at the receiving registrar. This may take a few days.
