360 update
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/360 update
anybody like the new dashboard? i've been trying to find my way around, and finally think i have learned where everything is. :) i personally think its more like the wii, with the avatar and all.
just found out you can browse everything the old way by hitting the guide button.
I like it. Much better than the old klunky thing. I'll be glad when the updates are bedded down and it stops throwing timeout errors because there are too many people connecting, but that'll be done in a day or two. Don't really care about the new avatar system, but the dashboard itself is much slicker than it was.
New dashboard? Ooo er, what a perfect excuse to stop working for the night, grab a beer and try out CoD:World at War which arrived this morning and is still in it's wrapper.
I prefer the old one i was using yesterday.
I like it and I think the avatar system is a good addition. The NXE Intro video was pretty cool, too.
It's going to take some getting used to, but so far I like it. Changing between accounts is easier now, so that is one thing I like.
I like the Avatars too, but it feels very "Mii" too!
I like being able to hit the center X button and get all the key things I need to do pop right up (Change ID, launch game)
The avatars are neat although they are very Wii like. Personally, I liked the old blades better. I heard you could switch back to that and I probably will. It was a much cleaner interface before, the new one just looks cheesy like one of those old Playstation Underground CD's they used to pass out.
I love it to pieces... looks great, feels slick and the avatars are great fun.
IPete2.
I love the way you can install games to the harddrive.
It should make Fable 2 even more enjoyable by reducing the loading times.
I like the new features, I'm not sure about the new look, it seems a bit less obvious and less easy to use. I'm completely unmoved about the whole Mii-clone thing. I liked the speed and simplicity of the blades, I'm not sure about this yet.
Darkheart
I like it.
The Avatars are obviously an attempt to compete with the Wii, but I really don't see much use for them since MS is being *very* strict about how and if devs can use them, and for what. And without a service like PSN's Home (expected to be released about the same time as Duke Nukem :-) ), there's not much use I can see.
The interface is much smoother and sleeker than the Blades. You can always use the mini-Blade popup if you don't like it. The intro video was kind of cool.
Streaming NetFlix videos is one of my personal favorite additions, but I haven't been able to try it yet. Hopefully they will have lots of options!
My favorite thing so far has been installing games to the hard drive. It's amazing how much I've missed because the stupid fan has drowned it out!
to me it seems like they took a dash of Wii a pinch of PS3 and a smidgen of Vista, threw it all in a pot and stirred it then poured it on my tv screen.
i'd have to say my like for it is about 70/30.
the old way was very boring to look at but extreemely easy to navigate.
the new way is very appealling to the eyes but is gonna take a little getting used to.
i will say i find myself a little disapointed with the party mode though.
although we finally have an easy way to get some friends together and get into a multiplayer game (which is the main thing and very cool).
i assumed that there would be better avatar interaction and more things to do to pass the time in the lobby while waiting to start a game. not overly (or even at all) important, but would have been nice to have something to pass the time while waiting. whats the point in being able to move your avatars head or click down the right stick to wave when no one else even sees these actions.
or another example: i think it would be really funny to logon and scroll through the friends list and see someones avatar jumping up and down waving as in a pick me pick me type thing ( meaning hey i'm hear and available to play something )
overall for the most part i do like the new update, it's just gonna take a bit to get used to.
the new update is pretty swish, am just downloading keflings for my kids to play.
Question:
If I want to remove the NXE dashboard update, can I do that just by clearing the cache on my harddrive, thus keeping my GamerTag and saved game files?
I mean, I love the new dashboard and everything, but the random lockups which have been happening frequently since the day I updated are getting a bit old, and suspicious.
its in the system section when looking at the memory. i don't think it will undo the gamertags or anything. but i would check first.
I didnt think updates were optional if you wanted to use live at all.
You're right, updates are not optional, but I'd rather have a 360 that I can't go on live with than a bricked 360, which is what an awful lot of people seem to be getting after updating to NXE. Shortly after the freezing starts, the console does it's infamous RROD trick. I don't play online, so the only things I would be missing would be the ability to give Microsoft money for their online addons, which I can quite happily live without.
I picked up a memory card today so I'll back the Gamertag and saved game files up before clearing the cache. It's worth a try.
Probably just a coincidence that your 360 is starting to malfunction after updating to NXE. Most 360s malfunction at some point, so I guess anybody whose machine develops a fault after updating the dashboard will attribute it to that.
You can't revert back to the old dashboard.

Well I'm pretty sure the nice - if barely understandable - Eastern European chap I spoke to on the phone today confirmed that it's a known issue with NXE. I did have to make him say everything twice though.

Well that makes me feel a bit better, since the freezing is now happening far too quickly for me to be able to clear the cache. Or backup any files. On the plus side, it still happens without the hard drive connected, so the hard drive is probably fine.
*lol*
