Is this Vista performance info any good?

Last time I posted this thread it got deleted, no idea why.

So anyway these are the scores on my new PC and I wanted to ask more experienced Vista users if these are any good or not. I was worried that the Quad core @ 2.0Ghz would run non-multi-tasking apps slowly (like the BMax IDE) and if that video card is a bit rubbish (I may upgrade it if need be - sometimes I think some effects are a bit sluggish, like scrolling in Firefox). Also is that hard drive speed any good, sounds OK but it's not a superfast drive or anything, it's a Seagate Barracuda 160Gb. Btw, I've got two more 500GB to fit this afternoon and also 2GB more RAM (I know Vista 32-bit can only address 3Gb)

Graphics: AGP Geforce 7800GS 256mb 5.9
Gaming graphics: 5.7
HD. 500GB Sata 2 HD on a SATA 1 interface and 250 GB PATA HD 5.9

Most of my hardware is 2-5 years old including the Graphics card which seems to be significantly faster than yours.

$115 will get you a 8800GT which can be 3-5x faster than my card in modern shader heavy games at high res. Your video card might be nice in 3D apps, but it seems pretty rubbish for desktop stuff by todays standards :(

I don't think the windows vista scores are a good way to judge your system it usually generalizes a lot and a much better video card than mine only gets slightly higher scores but yours did very poorly indeed :(

That's pretty low. My Intel GMA965 X3100 scores 3.3!

GA for your reference top scores are capped at 5.9, so there's nothing wrong with you hard drive speed. My hard drive (the oldest component of my machine now, a 6 year old IDE piece of crud) rates at 4.8 and I certainly don't feel like hard drive access is limiting my machines performance in any way.

Your graphics card is obviously the poorest component in your setup, but at a 4.4 it isn't going to be letting you down too much for gaming. The 3.4 score is for desktop (Aero Glass) performance which you've already noticed is a little sluggish, such a thing wouldn't bother me, however if you switch to Aero Basic (same as an XP theme) you'll be laughing.

All in all, it's a pretty sweet setup, although if this is the one BFG bought you, they could have provided a better gfx card ;] That would be the first thing you would want to upgrade down the track, but I wouldn't be in any hurry.

Regarding that 2+2 GHZ - I think that's fine... the video card might be the "(small) bottle neck" here. Otherwise things look good.

What sort of CPU is needed for a top score of 5.9? My friends running a core duo 8500 at 3.16ghz and it gets 5.7 I would have thought that this would have gotten a 5.9?

Windows Performance numbers don't really mean anything, the measure they use is very crude,I can't think of any games that use them either.

I got a system spec'd upto the eyeballs! Latest GFX, Fastest Memory (8GB worth), QuadCore (approx 12Ghz) blahhh and get a score of 4.5! Guess Vista sucks at scoring just like it does with most other things. But I still like it :)

Btw, my 2 year old laptop, 2GB -1.8Ghz CPU gets 3.4 - work that one out!

My system gets 5.9 for everything except the processor, an E8400 at 3Ghz, which gets a 5.6. It really is about time they increased the cap to above 5.9.

OK thanks for the info all (inc. Skidracer). So I'm gonna order a new video card.

More cores rate higher than ghz speed of individual cores I think. My quad Intel Q6600 (pretty low end quad core by todays standards) gets a sweet 5.9.

Hmmm, lesser PC gets lesser score. It's crazy.


The slackers should have upgraded this system with SP1. If SP2 doesn't raise the values then the system will soon become completely worthless.

My cpu gets 5.9.
