What's the longest time you spent playing a game?

Having just read this article about a boy spending 24 hours playing a computer game, it got me thinking about addictive games and the longest time I spent playing one individual game:

Sensible World of Soccer as I been playing that for 3 Years from 1992 to 1995

How did you survive with out drink/food or sleep for 3 Years. Not so sensible ;)

Longest I've ever played a game for was about 12 hours and that was the original Quake. Now it may be 3 or 4 hours that I play a game.

Only in the first few months of playing it, now I play for no longer than 2-3 hours at a time, and that's not often.

Also WoW for me, I don't remember how long but I wanted to reach the next level and was "almost" there so I kept on playing until just before breakfast. Maybe I should get a new account, at least I had a goal in my life. Oh wait I already reached that goal, level 70. Oh well...

Resistance on the ps3 coop with my brother for 14 hours straight.

XCOM on the Amiga, remember playing that till the small hours.
Waiting for the Aliens to take their turn took half the night.

Frontier Elite II, Asherons call 2 and star wars Galaxies also made me see the sun come up.

I played Pacman for eight hours straight, once.

Not doing it together would surely be wasted valuable playing time.


think again matey! They just gave you a whole new goal. Level 80!!! One guy did it in 27 hours, but he's dead now.

Battlefield 1942 was the only good one in the series.

Longest I've played.. probably like 10-14hrs of UO.

I guess there were quite some games were i or we (together with friends) were playing more than a day with only short breaks for eating and such fundamental things on games like for instance Ultima IX, mostly these games were rolplaying games or at least had some roleplaying factor inside.

You start in the afternoon and boom it's in the middle of the night and a little bit later on you realize that it's almost in the morning and that starting to sleep now doesn't make a lot of sense anymmore. The first birds start singing and whoops it's noon/afternoon/evening/night again. In hard cases we did this for two days but that was it.

I guess you're doing these kind of things when you're young, have the time, the passion and a fantastic game. It's funny how the reality can feel strange to you after the first day already.

I played Elite on the BBC for years, got knows how many hours a day. Settlers 2 split screen RTS on the amiga was another.

On PC, Halo 1, PGR 1&2, Max payne 2. NOLF, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 a little, Kotor and Jade Empire, Fable.

Quite a few had me spending an entire weekend at the beginning or playing through to the end in one or two sittings.

adriant - you actually got someone else to sit in front of settlers 2 for that long? It's my favourite game ever single player, but I can't imagine playing a full 2-player game.

Did anyone actually play anno 1602 multiplayer? *that* took days out of my life at a time, just playing against the cpu.

Me and my friend used to spend hours playing it too... a couple of mice, a 14" TV and a whole weekend... ah, those were the days :-)

Mozart Mud: 52 hours from a Friday afternoon until Monday morning, (mild halucinations and terrible thirst). (1994)

Longest total playing time probably Super Mario World: 1992 until now.

Jim, 3-4 hours is totally lame ;-) That's just like a normal gaming session for most people. I've probably done close to 24 hours before on games like UFO back in the DOS days.

I had chicken pox and couldn't go to work.

It was 12 years ago and I still work at the same company ;-)

First day I played Goldeneye on N64 was 16 hours straight. I felt funny after.

Oh and just for the record, the BlitzMax game i've played the most would be Gridwars 2 and the BlitzMax game i played the longest session would be Eschalon Book 1, if i remember it correctly this also costed me a night. This roleplaying/story driven stuff can really be dangerous.

A friend and I once played co-op Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker for about 18 hours straight one day. And I used to play Supreme Commander for 8-10 hours a day until I got tired of it.

It's dangerous to mix really, really, really awesome games with large blocks of free time.
Maybe someone should start a thread for 'longest coding session'! :-)

I don't think I've played any game for more then 6 hours straight - probably not even that long. In the last 10 years, not more then 2 hours straight.

my neighbour used to complain because of the constant explosion noises coming from Dune 2

I've probably put in over 6 hours playing CS at once but I dunno, I rarely play games for longer than 2 hours at a time.


A friend played WoW for 72 hours straight... Apparently he was the first lvl 80 on his server.

The longest sessions: I used to play Total Annihilation at LAN parties, we'd start Friday - and if the battle entered deadlock there where several that did not finish until Sunday.

Ugh. Not so hot at the 'hours straight' business, but Final Fantasy 12 took me over 170 to completion and my second time thru so far has been another 60+ hours.

As a child I played Secret Of Monkey Island (the first one) on my old IBM PC XT (4 terrible colours of cyan, magenta, black and white) and I started before my parents left for work and was almost finished when they came home - so about 10hrs.

Might and Magic 2 was played on the same computer from 1991 until 1994 without finishing it (because there was a single map square not visited that I'd missed in one vital dungeon) although there were periods of weeks that I didn't play. However in 1996 I found the internet, looked up a walkthrough and finished the game. Not too exciting at that point as my characters were ludicrously powerful with crazy stats - the difficult bit was when % protection abilities looped back around to 0 after climbing beyond 255 - made even 12,000 Hitpoint Knights vulnerable to being 'instantly killed' by certain spells.

Civ 2 - the game just used to soak up time, 'oh look its 4am again'

Definitely Civilization (Amiga) or Pirates! (C64), Airborne Ranger (C64) is a close third. I can't remember the exact numbers for each game but it was easily well over 12 hours.

I think Doom 3 and Quake 4 took a bit over 8 hours to finish, Crysis around 10 hours (My fault, I was distracted of the gameplay because of the storyline and beautiful graphics). BioShock took also longer than the expected 8 hours, I guess I was just getting old.
Klingon Honor guard was also quite standard 8 hour game, but that damn System Shock 2 just kept going on and on for days and weeks, so I stopped counting time. Lots of other games between too, all those C&C, Delta Force (you don't actually ever finish it as you play it all over again).

I recall starting a new game of Civ took about 12 hours just to start playing ;]

Oh yeah I too have spent HOURS in one stretch playing Eschalon Book 1.

Spellcaster for Sega Master System......around 7 hours!

ive had a few evenings turn into mornings with startopia a few years ago, probably sand box over the harder later levels.
now 12 hour working days leave me with very little me time so everything is spread thin (even on my days off i cant be bothered 'mapping' icicle works from the hex data and paintbrush)
