Hard to believe that came from the 60s.

with upscaling it makes things up to help fill in the gaps, nothing beats having an original huge file to work with

film negatives are the best example, who'd think a postage stamp sized image could fill a cinema screen, yet for a pixel pased image to do the same without anti alaising etc would be massive

few years ago i upscaled a screen grab from a 320 width quicktime music video to 1024*768 and considering the source blown up via quick time was a bit lego-ie psp did a nice job on it

they didnt upscale old images they rescanned them in a very long winded maner, but as they were saved to tapes as the negatives are probably on some crash site on the moon (if it was an unmanned probe)

i think they upgraded the hubbles camera once (as well as sorting out some bugs) its not quite the same as trading in your old 5mp camera for a brand new 12mp one

i avoided digital slr's and 'bridge' type cameras till i could afford a decent mega pixel, i was up untill 2 years ago using an APS and film scanner which gave me 2 or 3000 pixel wide images and as that took an hour to do at home when i found boots were offering similar sized one hour photo cd's for one pound on top of processing i went for that
mind you it cost a bomb to develop my festival rolls if i took too many with me so my digi cam paid for itself in processing costs alone

so i hope that the next camera they send into space has the best mega pixel money can buy and saves at a lossless format, nothing worse than jpg artifacts on hubble-esque photo's

You can already buy a Hasselblad 50 megapixel D-SLR that shoots to RAW (only $49,999.99!).

well nasa left a few hasselblads on the moon (had to be specially modified so were useless on earth) and i dont think $50k is much for them
