Is it wothing buying XBox games for a 360?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Is it wothing buying XBox games for a 360?

So I knoew there were loads of good xbox "classic" games, but is it worth buying them for the 360 or should I just stick to 360 games? I guess they must be pretty cheap but do they look a bit rubbish now, especially on a giant screen? Mind you I still play and enjoy PS2 and Gamecube games so I guess it's comparible.

Not all Xbox games work well on a 360 (or at all). PGR2, for instance, is supposed to work well. It doesn't.

From what I've seen of Xbox titles on the 360, the devs that did the backwards compatibility go on in and bump the resolution up as well as add in better texture-filtering and other little details on a game-to-game basis, so they won't look all that bad compared to actual last-gen titles.

if you can get them cheap used, why not :)

I've always wondered how they got the emulation working so well.

Because if my understanding is correct the new architecture is a 'power pc' based one where as the original Xbox was X86, running of a Pentium 3 based chip I think....

Would have thought there would of been a quite massive performance hit, I mean even with the greatly increased processing power I still wonder how they do it.

If any one has any insight to it I would love to know.

Maybe the graphics being directX base on both consoles helped? I don't know, I'm just guessing.

So the answer is maybe?

i play mostly old games on my 360, it looks better than they did on the xbox. however i haven't played on a huge hd screen, just my un-hd projector:)

I played Fable (the first one) on a 360, and enjoyed it, but it had a sizeable border (on my HDTV, anyway) and it took a few minutes for the low-res shock to wear off.

As VinylPusher said, not all games work (even if they're meant to). A full list of supposedly compatible games is here:

Jake,

On XBoxLive there are games which have been 'checked' to run on the 360 which come under the tab Original Xbox I think - I wouldn't buy just any old game from the shops - only download ones known to be ok. Some stutter and well, they were written with a specific graphics processor in mind which is no longer in use so things like Kunf Fu Chaos won't run properly (if you google it they explain why) - even though it was apparently one of the better games.

In fairness Fable II is lightyears ahead of the original Fable in its overall look and feel - I have found some irksome niggles with it - but generally its a fantastically done game (just silly things niggle me with it).

IPete2.

Hmm I didn't realise that old games weren't instantly compatible, that's a bummer. The Wii plays gamecube games fine for example.

If you like Ghost Recon, most of them are compatible. I recommend printing out this list and going to your local GameStop(or eqivalent in Vancouver) and pick them up cheap.

When you are traveling to Seattle for business you can pick them up here as well.

Some games don't work on the 360. The graphics are really a shock if you're playing on a nice big 1080p screen. They are cheap though, and some I really enjoyed, like Star Wars: The Old Republic (the Star Wars RPG, I'm not 100% sure that's the correct subtitle). You can download some games through Live, though.

Thanks for the list Cartman.

Ubergeek: Yeah I played Knights of the Old Republic on PC, it was great.

My XBOX collection consists of Taito Arcade classics 1 & 2, Midway Arcade Classics (1), Capcom Classics 1 (would love to get 2 but it was never released in Australia for Xbox) - those have some fun old games on them. A lot of them are rubbish, but there are still a handful of gems in there - like SmashTV for instance "Big Money, Big Prizes! I LOVE IT!"

PGR3 is pretty good, although I've heard that PGR4 is better. Wait - is PGR3 actually a 360 game? I can't remember. Oh well.

The Wii plays Gamecube games because it's essentially the same hardware in both consoles.

With that thinking you could say a gaming rig with an Intel CPU and nVidia GPU from 2008 is essentially the same as a gaming rig from 2001 because they have the same hardware?.

The Wii, while having an IBM CPU and ATI GPU, like the gamecube does not make it "essentially the same hardware".

It does though, makes it very compatible software wise. Hopefully when Nintendo make a Wii 2 (Wii Wii?), they will continue with the same manufacturer of chips and offer backward compatibility. With a bit of luck MS will also use the same in their next XBOX so it's fully backward compatible. Sony, however are a law unto themselves and don't seem to care about such things.

One of my fave XBOX classic games is Star Wars : Obi-Wan, but my 360 refuses to see run it :( - Full XBOX backward compatibility would of been better.

nah the wii #2 would be called poo surely ;)

Yeah, given the choice between Wii and XBox 360, the 360 outstanding graphics and marketing capmaign can only ensure the longevity of the console.

For example, I've been aware of online gaming associated with the Wii but just was not motivated to try it out. Can't say the same for XBox360 - I've been racing people from the states , the netherlands and the rest of the UK. Its something else to hear the comments from your fellow competitors whilst playing.

Sorry, getting a bit of thread. Will try a XBox game or two that I have and let you know of and incompatibilities.
