Trouble installing Blitz3D from CD

Just trying to install Blitz3D from the installation CD but its insanely slow building the install shield and copying files across. When I cancelled the installation it caused havoc and I had to reboot. This is on winXP, BTW.

Anyone else on XP experienced this?

Just tried copying the CD image onto HD and running it from there but it's still just as slow, so it's not the CD/CD drive thats to blame.

InstallShield is pretty slow and bloated, I had similar issue, you can only wait till it completelt initialzed to run.

Or try UniExtract to force extracting it.

Hmm, OK. But I'm sure it wasn't this slow on win98.

And when I say it's slow, I mean slow. At a rough guess it looks like it'll take ~1 hour to install everything!

Yes, it should run smoother under Win98, it's an issue of old versions of InstallShield and 2K/XP.

I just took out the Blitz3D CD and tried to install it again, it comes with some more examples than the online version, that's a good old memory anyway....

Yeah, I tried running it in win98 compatability mode but it made no difference. Oh, well. Cheers.

I haven't used the Blitz CD in years (I just keep blitz backed up as a zip file), can't remember having a problem though.

I don't remember having any problems either and I've reinstalled at least 3 times due to pc problems.

On XP, iprice?

The CD version used Installshield Pro 6.1 IIRC (I know because it was most probably me that built it), and its probably six years ago now. Possibly an XP SP2/SP3 problem?

Doesn't exactly solve the problem, but have you tried downloading the installer from your account>product updates?

do you have your AV disabled? You could be scanning every file as it is copied/installed?

Why install from CD when you can download it from this site?

I happened to have my Blitz2D (v1.73) disc lying around here, so just for poops and giggles I thought I'd see how that installed on this "modern" XP SP3 machine. Installed the demo of Double Top while I was at it. Aaah, the Good Ole Days...

To cut a long story short, it worked as expected. Nice and speedy, virus checker running in the background and all.

Something about your setup at the moment whispers "b0rked". And you thought upgrading from Win98 was something you wanted to do.... :o)

If you're experiencing general slowness with your hard drive (done a speed test?), I wonder if you've tried moving it onto its own IDE channel?

Used to be the case years ago that sharing an IDE channel between a hard drive and an optical drive could cause problems.... don't know if that's still an issue today but I always put hard drives and opticals on separate channels, out of habit if nothing else.

Hmm, good thinking about virus scanning being involved. I haven't experienced it causing problems previously, but I've just 'upgraded' to AVG v8 which I know others have said isn't so hot.

Anyhoo, I've been emailed by someone to tell me I can download it from my account. I didn't know about this; I was sure at one time you needed the original installer before you were able to download updates?

I actually do have a copy of my complete Blitz3D folder on a second HD but I wasn't sure if the installer added reg keys/sys variables or something. Seems like it doesnt so all should be OK.

AVG is dreadful. I made £20 yesterday repairing a Windows XP installation which it managed to un-genuineify.

Without trying to advocate one over the other, consider NOD32 or F-Secure. You don't need their firewall (unless you're not behind NAT, in which case they may be useful).

Or even just run ClamAV every once in a while.

I'm still running without AV software on my PC.

Yeah, I'm considering dumping AVG and going without any anti virus software too. I went ages without any on my old machine and never had any trouble. Also, all the years I have been using AVG, it's never found a single virus (except in unsolicited email attachments. duh!). I'm beginning to think common sense is all that's required.
