(-) Latency issues (looked about 350 millisec in the video) which renders it useless in 99% of fast-paced video games.


I'll be impressed once I see any form of 'video recognition' tech demo that operates 1:1 with the given video source.

Only thing I find cool about this compared to other videos is that is can recognize movement of depth (or at least it looks like it) and doesn't require any objects that use bright colours or little graphical codes pasted onto to work with, but I guess that would be due to the 3d camera requirement over a traditional fuzzy webcam?

Looked really good for media centre stuff though, just attach a little webcam to the top of your tele and do all your media centre tom-foolery with it.

I have a better idea: replace mouse with keyboard only. Instead of some cumbersome selecting of menu options with the mouse, you can just type: load "user:projects/file1". No need to select File -> Open -> Browse -> My Computer -> C: Drive -> User directory -> Projects directory -> scrolling and locating file1 from 3000 other files, and waiting for the whole directory to be read in when you only need one specific file.

Yeah I doubt it will take off, seems like way more work than just using a mouse.

Just because it doesn't require you to touch something tangible doesn't mean it's easier to use.

The lag is just horrible.

Ever tried painting a ceiling? Your arms will be feeling the same after using an interface like this for an hour.

Instead of gently moving a mouse that weighs a couple of ounces an inch or so while resting your arm on the desk, now you'll be moving your entire arm(s) all over the place, there's a lot more energy involved there.

The mouse/keyboard aren't going anywhere any time soon.

If you're using Ubuntu, you don't need a mouse. Most things in Ubuntu have to be done via the keyboard in the shell :P
It's actually one of the most difficult Linuxes to get to work, although they market it as the user friendliest.
Try openSUSE if you want a professional Linux, or PCLinuxOS or Mandriva if you want a easier than Windows Linux (but harder when you need to customize something).
openSUSE is the most rounded Linux, easy to install, easy to customize. Just don't use KDE4 (with any Linux), but KDE 3.5 always.

I disagree. Its extremely frustrating when trying to play any FPS or action game. That's why any fast paced game (Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros.) barely use the WiiMote's abilities past a shake here and there.

God forbid you might shift some lard waving your hands around.

Try keeping your arms suspended in the air for 8 hours a day at the office. I doubt you'll make it through the week.

there's a reason that the mouse and keyboard have been around for decades now in pretty much the same form -- they work.

This looks like just another fad, much like the whole voice recognition replacing keyboards. Sure, there are a few special cases where it may be nice from time to time, but overall it's just too much of a pain in the rear to actually take over.
