Borked laptop!
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Borked laptop!
My laptop screen has given up on life today. Haven't had the damn thing a year yet.
Screen breaks up when I lift the lid up/down. 99.9% certain the 30-pin cable to the screen is broken, but its hard wired to the display and I don't think its possible to change just the cable.
Fortunately still under warranty - 11 months and 2 weeks. O_O
Back to the shop on Monday. Probably take Compaq 2 months to get around to fixing it and get it back to me. :/
Down to one dev PC now and have no means of testing on widescreen. Marvellous.
You can't open a 1280x720 mode display on your remaining dev PC?
not unless its in a window.
One day Dave... I'm going to drive down to Yorkshire and... and... just build you a bloody decent PC!!! :P

My old ASUS laptop has had the screen fail twice in a few years, while under warranty - one of the cables had worn out from opening / closing it. I managed to get it to the repair store, have it repaired all during my lunch break - so it may not take that long to get it fixed.

If its at your expense, be my guest. :)

I got it from PC World. Nuff said. :/
Compaq's website claims that they carry out warranty repairs within 7 days. Whether that's true or not, and how long it takes before PC World bother to send it to them, is the unknown quantity.
[edit] ...and would you believe the bloody thing is exhibiting no fault whatsoever this morning? I'm still taking it in tomorrow as the warranty runs out soon (I think)... that's gonna make for an interesting conversation. :/
Didn't even last a year - that sucks. Well actually, it would've sucked more if it lasted just over a year, I suppose. Look on the bright side. :)
I had a widescreen TV with a 6 year extended warrantee. It broke a matter of weeks after the warrantee ended. :(
I sent my laptop straight to the MFG when it conked out, they replaced it within a week.
Different story with a phone though, got it from Dixons, within a week it lost its ringtones, the memory became corrupt and none listed. Sent it straight to SonyEricsson who sent it back in WORSE condition than when we sent it to them, with a note saying it was a foreign phone. German to be precise.
When I sent it to them, the phone worked, but didn't ring, it just buzzed. When I got it back, it wouldn't turn on, the screen would just turn white.
So if you wan't a UK phone in the UK, don't buy from Dixons, Currys etc.
Quite impressed so far. O_O
Rang PC World up this morning, explained the problem, they went through pretty much the stuff I'd already tried myself, didn't ask a single stupid question like you'd expect from PC World.
Bottom line is, they want to take a look as its still in warranty (until January, not November as I thought, so its actually 10 months old). Anyway, I don't even have to go anywhere - they're sending a courier tomorrow morning to collect it and take it straight to the service centre, and reckon it'll be away for 7-14 days, depending on what the fault actually is.
Got my laptop back this morning, all working again.
They've changed the monitor cable, and the screen as well. Its only been away for a week.
Hats off to PC World, for once!
Hats off to PC World
Mods - is this kind of filthy language allowed? ;)
(glad you got your laptop back ok)
It's Karma, for this act of good customer service by PC World, someone else is being royally screwed over by them.

That's fine, as long as its not me. :D

I used to do Compaq warranty repairs back in the day when I didnt mind breaking nails and they're pretty good - except the case of the faulty modem for some guy in cambridge who I visited like 5 times and they kept sending the wrong bit, but otherwise pretty good.
They got this rule about all engineers having to wear a wrist strap and you have to make very clear to the customer you are wearing one because they call round after you and if the customer cant remember or is vague you're in big badda trouble even if you didnt open the computer or did have one and the customer just didn't twig. So i'd wear mind dangling off my wrist no matter what and always make a point of showing it, they're really 'really' funny about that.
