Well, personally I'm falling on the XBox360 side.
I don't know if Sony do not advertise - however MSoft's marketing engine appears to be in full swing - adverts on the telly - and with some pretty credible products fable 2 & PGR3 to name 2.
Will Sony up their game ?
I'd rather have a PS3, but not until they chop the price in half.
I want a BluRay 360. Don't see any games on the PS3 I'm keen on, but want more than just a game machine since I can rent 10-16 bluray movies a month for $15.
Well I checked out MSoft's strategy for the 360, seems their banking on 720P netflix stuff in the hope it'll be good enuf. Doh.
Anyhow, you can get a BlueRay player for 200quid now, by christmas there'll be a drop, then you will be able to get the superior? gaming console and a separate dedicated Blueray player separately.
I won't be getting either for Xmas.
I've already got a 360 (and a Wii) and I don't want a PS3 (until there's something worth playing on it - and don't say Little Big Planet, as I'm not convinced there's actually a game included).
I wouldn't mind a GP2X Wiz or a Pandora if you're offering though :P
I'm having so much fun with my Wii via multi player (and some excellent single player) games with family and friends I'm not even considering an xbox 360 or PS3.
I've seen and heard all the arguments about Wii vs 360 and PS3 and that the graphics are superior on the 360 / PS3. Yep, I agree with that but I've never had so much fun on a console than with my Wii. Heck even my parent recently bought a Wii and they love playing with it. It was kinda funny when I was over recently watching them swing the Wii remotes around.
I'd get a PS3 for BluRay capability if the price was around the £150 mark. I've a nice Toshiba 32" HDTV and would like to have some HD gaming and HD movie support.
On the HDTV waffle, I'd never pay the silly prices for Sky HD but I'm currently waiting for FreeSat HD with recorder abilities which I believe are due out around Christmas time. I can't wait to have the HDTV strut it's stuff.

yeah, I've binned sky altogether and have gone the freesat route. I don't think SKY (acroynymn for suck kluptos yearly) subscribe to the IBA thing of 7 minutes of adverts per hour, most of SKY adverts force feed you their gunk. Youch you may think - but true.
Anyways, we got a Wii gifted to us so maybe we're hankering for some HD action. Oh yeah, our 2.5 year crt telly blew up so we went mad & went 42" HD.
Correct me if I'm wrong but i think XBox 360 has the best arsenal of quality games. So, I need a good gaming console (errrmm - Miccosoft have done the best job in comparison to Nintendo as far as HD goes, sorry Sony you are the also rans at the mo in the HD dept despite your supposed hold on the market).
kluptos = amoount of money sky think they can reasonably suck from folks squared+1(or is it a factor of 10? wiki it)
360 at some point with rockband just so i can beat out any work related issues on the drums (via pc preferably)
I have both systems (got the PS3 through a trade). I was a 360 fan boy until I got the PS3. Now I can play my old PS1 and PS2 games easily. I love that feature. XBox promissed this eventually and finally just stopped converting software for their older games. This really ticked me off. The other side of the coin though is that XBox 360 used games are much cheaper and easier to find than PS3.

I think console gaming is much more expensive than PC8 gaming.
FarCry2 costs 70€ for PS3 and XBOX, and 50€ for PC8.
Besides the console hardware gets old very quickly, while you can upgrade your PC8 hardware anytime.
So I'd say consoles are only a marketing trick to make them look cheaper in the beginning, but when you really want to play games it gets damn expensive.

360 actually has really good backwards compatibility, and a lot less troublesome than PS3's since sony dumped the hardware to cut costs.
360 still does get the odd title added, they just don't advertise it anymore since almost everything has been done except a few obscure japanese and odd games.
there's about 470 xbox games that run on the 360.
I have a Wii, and never been more happy, especially with mario kart and two steering wheels with a few mates! :)
After Christmas I'm on the hunt for a new TV, and then I'm going to build a new desktop.

Oh please. I have one of those models (the only type ever available in Aus) and it plays every PS2 game I have chucked at it fine. Conversely, it doesn't play FF8, which one could turn around and then say that the PS1 emulation that all PS3s have is much worse.
Even the PS3 website claims limited backwards compatibility, and Sony is better known for overstating their capabilities. Not to mention that newer models have no compatibility whatsoever.

It does if your looking to buy a new PS3 this chrimbo and have a catalogue of old titles you would like to play. Still, the PS2 emulator for the PC seems to be half decent these days.
I've been playing Final Fantasy VII and all my PS2 Games on the PS3 without any problems. I'm not expecting everything to work, but it's still pretty impressive.

Can't be bothered to argue on details :). Was just trying to bring it back to this coming christmas. And the fact that backwards compatibility no longer exists in any form on new systems.

If that is what they both want for Christmas then I'm not going to argue, but other then that they get socks...
or... you could really go to town, get them one pair of BIG socks between & each gets an apple, an orange and some monkey nuts inside - then they can learn to share (the socks) and they get a surprise! who needs a PS3 when you can have half a pair of socks some fruit and monkey nuts!

I'd go for the PS3. But if you already have a 360, Gears2 will keep you busy for a week or so...

No it's because most devs either struggle to get the power out of the PS3, or the PS3 doesn't actually have enough. A 1080 game doesn't HAVE to be played at 1080 so it has little to do with what TVs people have.
I have a Japanese PS3 on a lovely Sony HDMI screen.

I have had my 360 for 2 years and never had a moment of problem with it. My wife and I have logged some serious hours on the thing. Our experience may not be typical but, dollar for dollar it has been a fantastic entertainment purchase and we have been really happy with it.

This is why Microsoft has been pushing XNA and .Net so heavily. Future x-box's are going to have those API's, so any games developed with the framework are automatically forward compatible.
In fact, say a future x-box console can handle higher resolution textures.. One could theorize that existing games could be made to look better simply by replacing assets with higher-resolution versions.

If MS keeps going in it's current direction though, it will replace at least half of the functionality with something completely new, for no reason I can figure out. (I'm thinking WPF here, MS pretty much threw out windows forms and all the acumulated knowledge that went with it, or how new version of directX did pretty much the same thing sometimes).
All this and I generally like MS...
