Fable II... (no actual spoilers) my first hour.

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Fable II... (no actual spoilers) my first hour.

Well I only had an hour on Fable II last night, but my thoughts are mixed - see below:

Opening movies are beautifully crafted and rendered, I wish the game was just as good looking, but that may be harsh.

The first section of the game has an 'unfinished' look and feel to it. Conversations don't seem to be intelligent, they just continue on even when you run on and passed whoever is speaking to you, the conversation seems to continue anyway as if you are still there listening attentively!

Graphically its quite nice and vast - lots of details but the textures don't look to detailed on my CRT tv - maybe I need to watch this on an HDTV? (I hope that will solve the issue). The snow effects look lush - fab in fact.

Controls are reasonable to begin with, but the way to get another set of gestures mapped to the D-pad is a little overly time consuming and fussy imho.

Characters look very nice , though not as good as those in the movie clips.

On screen text is small and difficult to read on a 32" CRT tv via my yellow, red, and white cables.

Story is good and has twists and turns a little, but in fairness it's as if Link has just walked into another game dressed differently - that's a little harsh too, but you'll see what I mean as the story unfolds a little - and I couldn't help thinking I've heard this tale before - again I only played the first hour and these are only initial thoughts.

There are subtle and maybe less subtle moments in the game where you make a decision and it has an underlying effect on your future choices and character. For me even the subtle ones were pretty obvious - I hope this is not a dumbing down of the game or a sign of things to come.

The character movement is a little stilted occasionally, you can see what they were aiming for, but in my mind they missed, and there are moments in the early part where characters do not blend animations and that's really bad for a title of this stature.

My 15 year old son felt that during the main character swimming sequences the programmers have been lazy and I have to agree, this is a NEXT GENERATION flagship title and some of the splash effects are - well sub standard in my eyes, and things like effects around such actions are either too subtle or just plain wrong for such a prestigious title.

Annoying things occur in the initial section too because a second character follows you everywhere and, well to be honest, they just keep getting in the damn way all the time as you turn around and head back the way you came.

Maybe I was expecting too much - although this is Lionhead and Microsoft - it is a flagship title and the expectation has been pushed very very high, however maybe its because the programmers did this bit first and forgot to go back and polish it, which is all it really lacks and that is sad. Maybe the next section will be more pleasing?

I did feel the interaction with man's best friend was nice in the start of the second section, there are some pleasing moments in all those.

So overall I did like what I found, there were just some moments and aspects which felt out f place. I just noticed Edge gives it a 9/10. I shall wait until I have played it more before I judge further. I'm back on Sunday night so I shall have another play session then. In the meantime what did you guys think ?

I haven't really fallen for a lionhead game since Bullfrog lol. Most of the core team are still from the Bullfrog days. But the games since have tried to gell hardcore and casual and failed miserably.

There's a article that explains whats going on with Fable.

Peter Molyneux Envisions Convergence of Hardcore and Casual Games

Games have been too dumbed down for a long time, Publishers want all games easy enoug for some novice 6 year old gamer to pick up a controller and stumble through without many problems. In a lot of violent games the player can't even really die. So no real challenge, and little to engage anyone that wants a certain ammount of depth and involvement that requires skill to finish a game.

So, first impressions don't seem to great, but 9/10 is good....

Won't cross the xbox & Fable2 of the christmas list just yet then.

IPete: I seriously recommend getting a HD TV, I played 360 on a normal TV for a while before going HD and the difference is incredible.

HTDV is like pc gaming on a high end system going from VGA with antialiasing locked on to 1024x768 with AA

@andy_mc and AdrianT -

HDTV is where I wanna be - I just can't put money into it just yet, but I will soon - maybe a Christmas treat - hmmm sounds like a great idea. I have a friend who lets me plug the 360 in to his HDTV and it does look entirely different - Guitar Hero is incredible as is Race Driver Grid (on HD settings of course) and the other stuff I have shown him. He has a PS3 and that just looks awesome on there - GT5 Prologue is soooooo sweet too.

@Blitzplotter - please don't let me put you off - its worth the purchase for the snow effects and light effects alone, its just got some little bits which seem like Lionhead just ran outta time. 9/10 is a high score so I guess Edge have played it through and then again maybe it is just those few things in the beginning which are not as sweet as you'd expect - hey maybe my expectations were too high?

My son and I were just a little disappointed with what we saw in the first half hour, the second section started well and the bits with the dog are ace... but the splashing effects are nothing more than a lazy particle overlay which any noob in B3d could do imho and some of the animation blending is poor in the first section. The water itself is nice, but thats nothing new, I was expecting more across the board in terms of quality consistency thats all.

I have Banjo on pre-order too so I'm now trying to reduce my expectations for that game, cause I just Love Banjo Kazooie on the N64. Rare don't you dare let me down even a little - do you hear!?!?!?

@IPete2 ... I've a HD Telly (my 2 year old CRT blew up) but no HD console yet. PS3 has blue ray which is a pull, however PS3 does NOT have Fable 2 & PGR3. Quality not quantity, & my family are big Fable I fans. If only Msoft would release a perpheral for the XBox 360 by christmas, or even forecast one that'd swing it for sure.

Well you can pick up a stand alone blu ray player for £200, that'll go down by christmas - xbox360 here i come.

Sorry if I de railed the thread, they're even advertising Fable 2 on the TV now....

I was a big Fable fan on the original Xbox. I keep being tempted into buying a next gen console but I want something that plays bluray that isn't a PS3.

well Adrian, just so you know Fable 2 is only on xbox 360

@boom boom you've a little red x thing near your siggy - regards/haha

good point about fable2 is a 360 thingy only.

If you have an XBox 360 or PS3, and you don't have an HD display, you bought your stuff in the wrong order. :)

Both of these consoles were made for HD.

That said, my better half is playing and enjoying Fable 2 as I type. She played Fable to completion and said that this one is a pretty big improvement over the first one (though not significantly so.. it's still linear, but not to the degree the first one was)

I know I know - don't rub it in!!!!! Lol Seriously though I bought my Sony 32" crt just before LCD became available/economic and it cost a fortune :( - so I can't just afford to chuck it out and replace it with something half its cost and 10 times its quality - yet - but I will when I can afford it.
