So I didn't dilute another thread I have moved this to here.
I just got back from Copenhagen where Unity Technologies ( Unity3D ) had its' 2008 conference - well Unity3D just went into hyperspace - what a fantastic 3 days!
In particular:
Keep an eye out next week for http://www.fusionfall.com the soon to be released MMORPG from Cartoon Network - re-written in Unity3D in 4 months! - yeah you read it right, 4 (FOUR) months with only 4 Unity guys helping a team transfer the game and tens of thousands of unique assets from another engine - its a massive world (not as big as maybe Guild Wars or something like WOW) but hey... every Cartoon Network character IP is in the game and they play with you! That in browser MMORPG will be a MEGA GAME for kids to enjoy.
The iPhone Unity publishing version launched on Wednesday and has some fantastic features - including occlusion culling - texture compression - multiplayer - multi touch - accelerometer access - texture combiners - Xcode deployment in one click and remote play whilst editing the game on the Mac in Unity you continue to play it on the iPhone, using it as the input mechanism and the visual response - wonderful. Here watch the video yourselves to see why I am talking about Unity with such passion. Click on 'View Video' next to the clapperboard on this page.

Unity is not even just in a different league now, its in another Universe compared to most real-time 3d game 'engines' and game languages. With the new license structures for Indies, and a Windows version literally just around the corner(early next year), its a 'must' to check out game engine.
Phil Harrison (mentioned in my other post/thread) said the first time he saw the tropical Island demo in his browser was a 'Eureka' moment for him, and he's been a Unity follower ever since - and that's why he made the keynote at the conference. He was at great pains to say not Unity exclusively, so it is only fair I say that too ! :)
For those that don't know Phil was responsible for the Sony PS One launch and subsequent spectacular rise of the PS One sub culture and ultimately he was the man behind the initial success of Sony's first console.
Here's the why and where for: http://gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=20779
Here's the objective conference review on Gamasutra : http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=20813
I just hope Max3D lives up to the hope of those waiting for it. But like when I finally realised that my Amiga just didn't cut it anymore, and I moved on to a PC, now I am moving to Unity 3D, with very fond memories of my B3d life and my other eye will keep looking for BMax3D.
In the meantime B3d continues to be a product of choice for the right project, for its ease of use and I think its unparalleled stability and I love it - I have just decided to do something more now - any beginners reading this should think long and hard about if they need anything else - I'm sure 99.9 % don't - but for those who do - like me - Unity3D is the way forward.
