Far Cry 2 is out tomorrow.

'nuff said.

On your way sonny.

Well, I've read a number of reviews and they all say it's nothing like Crysis, so that's a good start.

Trouble is, Fable 2 and Dead Space are out tomorrow too. Plus Fallout3 is out next week. Gonna be an expensive week?

I really enjoyed the first one when it was released. Ruined games like Doom 3, and came out of the blue.

I like the setting and graphics in the vids, especially the dynamic wind and fire. Just wish I wasn't so bored of FPS that I'm not sure I can be bothered with this one. Maybe when I upgrade my puter and can play it with absolutely maxed out settings I might change my mind.

You mean yesterday? ;)

Too bad.. Fable 2.. no 360 :(

Played 2 hours now and I think it's pretty refined, polished, bugfree and the graphics are ok, AI is really good, very open ended game, lots of guns and vehicles and other goodies.

It's like a serious GTA which takes places in a beatiful modelled Africa. I liked it.

For those out of the loop:

wow... nice vid. I may need to upgrade from my main game consoles (Dreamcast and Saturn) to a better PC or a 360. ;)

I agree with mortis, the GTA style of farcry is very funny :)

Cor, reminds me of the old days when I used to get excited about the release of certain games.

Wow, this looks cool. I like how they show how totally corrupt and messed up Africa is, it seems pretty realistic. Seems like it would make for a good story.

Played another 2 hours...this game is great, I didn't think it was going to be a good game but it really surprised me. I also recommend Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway to any FPS fans.

Neat. I'm quite excited too as I'm going to get a new PC in Vancouver and checkout the latest games. Hmm, better check the min specs for this game...

I actually enjoyed Crysis (and Warhead) way more than this crap.
The so called "open ended world" gets replentished with new baddies at every check point, even if you were there for just 2 minutes ago.
The lighting is totaly out of whack, making me not see the graphics or the dudes im trying to kill.
and driving for 10 minutes (while trying to avoid or run through checkpoints) just to get to a mission with 5-10 minutes of gunplay gets rather boring after a while.

Ive only played this for a few hours though, im hoping it will get better ;)

As long as it's better than 'Boiling Point:Road to Hell' I'll be happy ;-)
I like big sandbox games.

But I'm thinking I might get Fallout3 first for a more cerebral, fiddly playstyle.

..im waiting Tomb Raider Underground for my PS3...i have always enjoyed such games, with beautiful environment/puzzles..im not sure about Far Cry, is it worth salt...time will tell..

Aaaah Boiling Point:Road to Hell, that was total crap but I played that a lot, couldn't find a better alternative :)

I think Crysis represent a different sub-genre of FPS games. It was a lot more linear, like a movie. It doesn't make any sense to compare it with FC2.

I don't really like games that look this real because they are so addicting!!!

bloody brilliant if you like jungle warefare :)

The game is great even on my PC :)

I just got it home and installed it.

I will play it now - no calls or emails please.

ps, don't forget I have a high-spec PC and new widescreen monitor - just so you know that I am going to see it in all its glory.

Ive played it some more now, and it kinda grows on ya. Even with all its ugly warts.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone else have trouble with the HDR being too bright/dark making it very difficult seeing whats what when both extremes are on the screen at the same time?
This havent troubled me with other "HDR" games, like halflife2 or oblivion.

I've not yet noticed any visual snags - but only been playing a bit.

I wish that mobile phone would stop bloody ringing - I just spilt have a bottle of Johnsons whilst creeping up on a camp full of wogs - nearly had a heart attack.

Is it worth getting? I am not sold on it yet, especially with no demo.

I think it is great.

Sort of like the original Far Cry - you are kind of a mercenary - lots of cool ideas - you meet up with various buddies in the game - who do things for you and stuff.

I like the way you can repair things and carry out first aid on yourself.

Best thing is to watch videos of it on YouTube, etc.

Also the day/night cycle is cool. I'm in Africa, watching the sun set.

I wonder if lions come out at night?

sniff?

Actually, it is probably a bit like a cross between Far Cry and Stalker.

It looks like a more open Crysis, with more variety, but I have read a lot of bad feedback about it.

Mortis

Check this out - looks like Boiling Point 2 essentially
http://community.livejournal.com/deep_shadows_en/

When I get tired of missions I just steal a dune buggy and chase zebras. I also saw some buffalos, killed one and the others legged it in light speed.

@Madjack:
Yeah man I keep an eye on White Gold here is the official link;
http://whitegold-game.com/eng/

The game gets better and better :D

But one thing that puts the whole experience down is the insta-spawning.

examples:
Trucks in high speed spawning just a few meters away from you (headed right for you, almost impossible to get out of the way)
This happens a lot, right after youve killed most or all baddies at a spot, and its not limited to trucks.

The most fun is when they respawn right outside your "safe house", guess it wasnt that safe huh? hehe.

But the action is top-notch, if you enjoyed the action in the original Far Cry, or even the Crysis games. This is right up your ally.

Are the graphics as good as Crysis?

Even though technically it ins't on par and is less demanding than Crysis, it is far superior aesthetically (both in level design and effects simulation).

very shiny - tho, i have to admit, im kinda done with fps - until they
create something really special. this jst looks like eyecandy..i dont see
anything amazing about it - but then, its probably cuz most of these games,
only keep me occupied for 1/2hr..then i get bored..

Theyre going to endup like rpg's - were you have to backtrack about 2hrs
of terrain to do something you forgot about... i want to play a game, not spend ages doing mundane crap - thats what the real world is for ;)

Leadwerks : Yes, it seem be the same 3D engine. I like the editor too :)

...excitement at begining died within 30 minutes of playing...FPS games suck big time..

Leadwerks : Yes, it seem be the same 3D engine.

No it isn't: it's a Ubisoft Montreal in house engine called Dunia.

The engine seems to concentrate more on weather and environment simulation and interaction than rendering technologies, and it's said to use no more than 3% of the Cryengine code.

I think "halo" is playing hard-to-get. He knows he wants the game - he's just making it beg.

I took the manual to bed with me last night.

The game looks terribly bland to me.

Call me a sausage-wobbler, but there are actually zebras and stuff.

I thought that "Mortiis" might be fibbing.

I was driving along a dusty road - all of a sudden - zebras Large in from out of the bushes and Large along the road - "puki" in pursuit - like a slug that had just spotted a four-legged, 15KG, block of extra mature farmhouse cheddar.

Yeh, the excitment is still dripping from my face.

heh cool. Can the game be a hunting sim then. I think being a big game hunter in a somewhat politicaly unstable environment could be pretty cool.

I used to throw turtles to the atmosphere with the nano suit's maximum strenght mode in Crysis. It was more fun. I love animals in real life though.

Movement controls feel like driving a tank. Blatant console port feel. No lean control, no prone, (both of which are super important for an open-ended game that pushes tactics). Jumping on to a ledge requires about six attempts and there is no climbing function, even though that has been a must-have with such games for the past two years. At the very beginning of the game I was tasked with jumping on top of a tipped over cabinet. I tried about six times to do this and failed each one, until I decided to push the thing. Cabinet was not movable. WTF this is 2008 and this is the hyped FarCry 2 and I can't push a Cabinet?!. Eventually (10 tries?) I managed to sprint-jump over the cabinet.

Controls also show a lack of polish in other realms. For example, zooming in on the map is done with the Reload key (?!). How anyone could guess that is beyond me. If they were remotely sensible, they would have used the weapon change key (which is usually the mouse wheel).

I found that vehicles can be quite long-lived in this game if you fix them often enough. Basically the only way to break them is getting them stuck inside fences, which happens astoundingly often.

They push a "choose to attack by night or day" sort of thing here, but the purpose is entirely defeated by their junk AI. I can sneak up on a guy in broad daylight while standing in front of him. Darkness would only further the misery this pours upon me.

Trees are destructible. Cool! Tinkering ends there, however, as buildings are invincible. So basically there is no point for the trees being the way they are because the AI does not seem to react to
them and they won't break anything else.

My buddy told me to "look out for the fire!" that I lit, then proceeded to nearly kill herself in it because she had somehow become wedged between a tree and a fence while hovering in mid air.

I have encountered no zebras so far, but I did meet some chickens. I stood in their pen and they were motionless. Completely. Motionless. No clucking, no walking... Nothing.

The malaria thing is driving me crazy already.

Picklesworth review is wicked.

In two hours of gameplay I already had two movie-like experiences which were not scripted and allowed only by good level design, human-like AI behaviour and clever ideas. Attention to detail and realistic object placement is impressive, the setting astoundingly immersive. We could say that it's Stalker done good with an unbiased African setting.

@Picklesworth: Controls are good, never had to push a cabinet, vehicle control have an excellent real-life feel, do not stuck unless driving wheels are off the ground and it's actually better to leave them off firing zones if you don't want to blow up, chicken and cattle actually react, leaning would be good but it's not much of a problem. Malaria is one of the good ideas to add non-scripted narrative (when I was being shoot in the desert in an action packed situation and had to hide behind something to get my damn pills, I was actually entertained by the dramatic situation). About the AI, what you tell it's beyond my experience (going in front of an enemy which doesn't see you? I can't go nearer than 100mt in daylight before being seen!).

I like the game. It has it's quirks - some mildly annoying, but I like it.

Well, perhaps it is because the npcs have really long reaction times at first. I'll try bringing up the difficulty level...

As for the chickens, though, I truly stood on their heads. It was at the very beginning.

Graphics are pretty and it definitely does have lots of nice things going on. As for the malaria making me crazy... really, it makes me crazy. Jury's out on if that is good or bad :P

I was disapointed to find that an insignificant gas station I had annihilated earlier had reformed, dead cars removed. I shut my eyes, used my imagination and drove on.

Oh, the best part about this game is it actually runs on my computer. For some reason in DX10 mode it insisted on running in a window and the intro videos ran like Crysis (really poorly), which was a bad sign, but DX9 works fine on my 8600M GT.
That, and it wisely takes up a small enough part of my hard drive that it won't need to be uninstalled (I had to kill Medieval 2 Total War to fit this in!). Nice to see that 12 GB games are indeed not the norm.

I have Crysis and FarCry2. Farcry2 has some new features, which are better than in Crysis, but Crysis still wins all other existing games in graphics quality and realism. I like in FarCry2 the full 3D immersion, everything is in-the-game, and you don't get thrown out of the story with some 2D UI's.
FarCry2 also tried to ape Crysis's archipelago and buildings a lot, but they forgot to add specular bloom, so it all looks like playing Crysis on High settings, and not Very High, which is the only useful setting in Crysis.
