Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/7 years already? (old-timers, report here)

Oh dear god... I just realized that I've been using Blitz3D close to 7 years now.

And it feels darn good engine even today :)

---

Tell when you got blitz product in your hands.

I originally got the free version of BlitzBASIC in a PC-Plus magazine, many years ago (Feb 2002 Edition).

I played around with that for a few years, and then purchased Blitz3D in 2005.

pc format and the mykeP tutorials
and done sod all with it since ;)

Finished coding my entry into the 2nd No External Files competition in the demo version of Blitz2D back on July 4, 2001.

...and done sod all with it since. ;)

(Actually, that's not quite true, but it's such a sweet turn of phrase I couldnt' resist.)

Hmmm, I knew there was a PC version being developed back in the day, but stumbled across BlitzBasic (PC, 2D) some time later... had a housemate with a PC... thought 'well, Amigas dead I'll get use this eventually', so bought a copy. Later, bought a copy of Blitz3D without actually owning a PC too, but got one some months later. Good times ever since.

I bought Blitz2d many years ago. I bought Max when it was still in beta. BlitzCoder helped me get up to speed. Great tutorials by Krylar and all the good posters over there.

Yeah, I saw a news item in PC Format about Blitz being on the PC and bought the original Blitz PC in 2001 after using Amiga Blitz from 1998. Wow... 10 years of using Blitz - the years have flown!

@ Hotcakes.

The Amiga is not dead yet Bud. There's still raft-loads of Amiga users out there.

Oh, yes... BlitzCoder (oh the good ol' times...) & Krylar's tutorials.

Hmm, I wonder what happened to Krylar by the way...

Since James posted on the Ami-Blitz mailinglist that Mark was working on a version of BlitzBasic for the PC, and needed betatesters. I have no idea how long ago that is. I remember I had to upgrade from NT4 to Windows 2000 to even run it, so I'm guessing it's about 8 years ago.

The Amiga is not dead yet Bud. There's still raft-loads of Amiga users out there.
And with AmigaOS4.1 for the ACube SAM440ep selling like hot cakes, it's time to get BACK FOR THE FUTURE baby! Wonder if we'll get BlitzBasic for it? Mark? Here's your chance to make that "Linux Console" thing happen!

I got Blitz on the PC in 2001 while at University. Been playing with it on and off since, but never made anything really big.
Only the games on my blog:

Soon after blitz3D was released. I had been looking at that other basic game language and was about to buy when I say Blitz's lovely syntax...

Iirc, I started spamming here shortly after the release of B+, before that I was using B3d for some years, and even before that B2d.

Dunno how long I've been here... Since Day 1 of Blitz3D, I heard about it on the DarkBASIC forums, signed up on the BB forums, then George Bray invited me to Idigicon (Guildhall leisure then) off the back of my DB work.

Bought BB3D on (or there abouts) the day of release.

The Amiga is not dead yet Bud. There's still raft-loads of Amiga users out there.
There were 'raft loads' of people for a long time after the Titanic went down, but it'd still sunk.

Been here just over eight years now - somebody I worked on AMOSZine with told me about it. Took my 2p jar to Guildhall and picked Blitz Basic up from there, as they're just down the road from me. Started coding Hole in One almost straight away on my Cyrix 233MHz PC.

Been using Blitz since around 2002(ish)!

Its been a while! :D

Dabz

It's been about 7 years for me. I remember working on the True-Vol engine trying to utilize every feature of Blitz. It was an exciting time.

All the way back from getting an email from George Bray (Guildhall Leisuire) announcing the incoming of Blitz PC

then George Bray invited me to Idigicon (Guildhall leisure then)
I got an invite several moons back too. I had the tour around Guildhall Leisure in Doncaster. Got flashed by a 'safety' camera on the way back out of Doncaster as well (doh!)

On looking at the source code samples to the initial PC Blitz I kind of thought at the time, "mmm ... looks a bit too basic. Besides, the PC has no hardware scrolling so the games are going to be pants."
Having seen a scrolling demo running though I was hooked and reeled in

Been here for yonks, just not as much now adays.
Got ahold of my 1st copy after seeing a articel about it in edge magazine. Blitz2d at that time.

Well apart from BBasic 2 on Amiga some ooh 15 years ago I guess, I'm a medium timer as I got BPlus in Nov 2004.

Me too, Blitz Basic 2 on the Amiga, way back in the early 90's, although took about 5 years away from it up until BlitzMax came out on the Mac.

Got BB2 for my miggy in 96/97 and the PC version in 2002. Time flies!

Been with Blitz since 2.1 on the amiga and the PC since it began :D

I think I was here when BlitzBasic came out!!

I'm one of those PC Format people who got the giveaway version of Blitz2D, found Blitzcoder, then picked up Blitz3D and moved to that.

Its hard to beleave its been so many year now. I remember waiting for blitz2d to be released and yet I neverd tried or heard of the amiga version before I found it.

Since James posted on the Ami-Blitz mailinglist that Mark was working on a version of BlitzBasic for the PC, and needed betatesters.

Actually, I think that was George Bray -- I'm pretty sure that's how I heard about it too.

2004 for me, I descovered Blitz late in life - oh the shame!

Actually I tried it back in the Amiga days from a coverdisk, and I didn't really understand it - things just didnt click into my AMOS-esque head.

When I migrated to Blitz in '04 I found the first 2 hours or so where a bit of a head foxtrot, and after that I never looked back.

Commercially I have to use a lot of other tools, but i've used Blitz for 1 industry application you can find on Amazon (i'd rather not say which, I left in a pay dispute [no I wasnt asking for more, they where months behind on salary] with the final version 'not quite' finished, they actually released it using an earlier proof of concept, it works, but i'm not proud!). I also used Blitz for a proof of concept at work recently, and may use it for some mini projects next year.

I still think it's a great language.

I was living happy in my Amos Professional days..

but in 2003 i wanted to code on pc magin sweet pc games. i did try out DJGPP and Alegro. but a little bird vissled in my left ear and told me to look into blitz basic 3d. i only did it once.. never to look at anything else.

Blitz3d is the moste stable platfrom forever :)

I started dinking around in GW-BASIC 20 years ago -- and have precious little to show for those two decades of programming. :-?

There were 'raft loads' of people for a long time after the Titanic went down, but it'd still sunk.

LOL... True.

But you must admit, the Amiga went further. :D

Old BlitzCoder here. I got mine from Krylar when I did the artwork for his book. Don't recall what year that was, but it's been a bit.

2001 Darkbasic --> Blitz3d.

(Hoping for 2009 Blitz3d --> Blitzmax + Max3d?)

since the first BlitzBasic... I checked the white ring binder that one came with and the copyright shows 1990. It shipped with a dongle for copy protection... I had to use on a friends Amiga 2000 for a while since the dongle didn't work on the A500. I'm pretty sure Mark's fix was just to eliminate the dongle. I missed the first year or two of PC blitz, those were my C++ days.

I bet when we're all in our 60's & 70's we'll still be at the pub
talking about blitz .. hehe

Tried the DarkBASIC demo around 2001-ish. Wanted to do 2d games.
Performance was *terrible*.. read some forum where people were recommending blitz basic.

7 years eh? In some ways, it seems like time's just flown. In other ways, it feels like a long time. I mean, remember the wait for blitzmax? Seemed like an eternity.

I bought it in 2001. But i have using DarkBasic before. And before that, I was using AMOS.

Blitz 2D somewhere in 2000 / 2001 or something. Time flies!

Just bought Bliz3D a month ago. I love it!

Was one of the beta-testers for BlitzBasic (2D that is), after hearing that it was coming and contacting Mark. George Bray posted us all a boxed copy as a thank you. Long time ago now! Before that I had BlitzBasicII on the Amiga and used it to write a game ("Manic Manoeuvre") which was published on an Amiga Power cover disk.

My first bb-source is dated 16.08.2002, so three quarters of a year to go :-)

You know... I think I might try to get back into music. Its been a funny day today.

Ten years ago today - right at this very minute - 7:45pm 21st October 1998, I was just going on stage in Norwich to open for Mansun to 2,000 people. Its a perculiar feeling. I can remember it all so vividly like it was just a few weeks ago. It just doesn't seem like ten years have gone by.

Think I might dig the guitars out tomorrow and see if I'm still able.

I bought Blitzbasic 1 june 2001.

September 2000 !

I got Blitz3D within a few months after it's release. I was one of the DB users banging my head against the wall with stuff like having to use numbers as variables to store models etc. I still have nightmares about that crap...

I've got Blitz3D in 2002, and if i never got Blitz3D, i never learned to programme C++ in that grade, than that level i can programme it today.
Thanks to Blitz! :D

Ooh... there sure are old-old-timers here! I actually didn't even know that Blitz was for amiga at some point. What was it like then? :)

"I bet when we're all in our 60's & 70's we'll still be at the pub
talking about blitz .. hehe"

Sunshine: I'll be reminding you about this after some decades...

You never lose it Dave.

lol @ GP

Golly Gosh has it really been 7 years !!!

blitz2d version then the the rest is history, its been 7 years wow, now i wonder how long i used blitz on the amiga some years i think. i think it was visiting dark basic where i seen blitz was coming to the pc not sure how long ago that was but ive been through the numbers of un-offical sites before this site.

blitz basic 2.1 on the Amiga around 2000 ish - made a very accomplished bike speed thingy, just compiled BBasic 2.1 in WINUAE.....

The PC version I was amazed to see a demo on PCFormat, led me to buy Blitz 3D about 3 years ago, then BMax and Grey Alien's Framework about 2 years ago.

Just recently been playing with a JV-ODE physics engine in B3D. How the time flies (;-)

Hmm... should we get a life or something...? ;)

Naah, got one thanks ;-)

lol - have a great weekend everyone ! :)

I've been here for around 7 years also. Time flyes by.
