The Last Starfighter

I suppose Doom is about the most enjoyable for me, but that's not saying much...

Silent Hill started out OK, but lost it pretty quickly, so that's a close second.

The Resi films strayed too far from the games to be even considered as computer game based movies ;)

Hitman was a surprise for me.

Don't know if it was my favorite but Cloak & Dagger made an impression on me as a child.

Yea, as a straight move from a game (so not including movies like wargames, tron, last starfighter etc) I would pick hitman. Its the only one I would want there to be a sequel too, all be it with a slightly better budget.

I thought it did what a movie from a game should do, it took the underlying concepts from the game, planning, tactics, cunning etc. Then developed them to a far greater level of complexity that you couldn't really do in a game. It was good as it felt like a hitman movie, not a hitman game.

Tron was actually the first movie I saw at the cinema, still love it now.

I'm not sure the likes or Resident Evil or Tomb Raider are "Computer Game themed Movie's" as they are about Zombies and Breasts respectively.

Tron, The Last Starfighter and Wargames certainly are computer game related as the theme of the movie is computer games, Toys (that Robin Williams film) probably could fall into this category too at a stretch.

Actually Riddick was a really cool game.

Um my choice is Resident Evil, it was pretty good, way better that poop raider. Tron is classic but it's a bit weird.

Riddick was about watching big muscley men in a totally heterosexual way, Resident Evil was about Zombies and Tomb Raider was about boobs. Not computer game themed, they are computer game tie ins.

I'll pick a strange one here: Super Mario Bros, despite being smashed almost everywhere, was actually a good fantastic extravaganza, way better than current movies based on games. I watched it way too years ago though, should try to see what it looks like if I see it today, but I still have some vivid memories of it's original ideas.

Picking game inspired ones, it would be The Last Starfighter. Tron 2.0 was actually better than the movie in representing real IT concepts in a creative way due to higher understanding of computing by the developers.

Silent Hill completely loses control in the end, with a fifteen minutes explanation of the events thrown in as if it was a request from the producers, and an excessive violent scene featuring an impressive amount of gore which hit the screen in a totally unexpected way (as it has nothing to do with the story). The hollywood paradox is that the useless gore scene got there, but the themes tied to abuse and Piramid Head not, making him a giant sworded guy with no real meaning. However, at least it has got value as a movie where most game conversions have not (even excluding all Uwe Boll ones).

At the moment instead is in the filming a Prince of Persia movie, and it looks like Jordan Mechner was involved in the screenplay and producing (he has a level of maturity which overpasses Ubisoft staff, as you can see from the original arabian fairy tale style he used in the first two games, and his exceptional work on The Last Express, as opposed to the last two Prince of Persia which feature teenager narrative and unneeded dominatrix clothing). Anyway, the movie is directed by Mike Newell, which comes from the BBC, directed some of the Young Indiana Jones episodes and Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire. It also stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina. So far so good, it looks they're doing it the right way... let's hope for the better!


You're right, the movie is, but the game more than a tie-in reinvented almost everything for the better. I would say that it is very reminiscent of early John Carpenter movies, and surely one of the most well written games of the last years. It's unique in that respect, since it outsmarts the movies in almost every way (in fact I always despised even Pitch Black, the low-budget sci-fi horror which started it all, which I found all but good).

I'm pretty sure there has never been what I would consider a good computer game themed or computer game tie-in movie. I did very much enjoy Sneakers, although I don't think there were any game themes in that, and it was more about the quality of the acting than the stunningly realistic portrayal of the computer underground.

Wargames, definitely.

Games made into movies generally are awful, i.e. Mortal Kombat.

Well, that was about hacking, and one of the most well done political thrillers out there as well (the attention to detail was evident starting from the involvement of Leonard Adleman, the creator of the RSA encryption system).

Oh right OK (although Sunshine never 100% confirmed that). But in that case I pick Tron. What this thread really reveals is that there are HARDLY ANY computer game theme movies at all! This is surprising considering how many people play them. Perhaps there's a gap in the market. OK new thread coming up...
