I can't find any mention of what the laptop mouse is called. Do you know the formal name for it? The rubber button came off my HP Laptop. Do you know how easy they are to replace?

It depends on who you ask:
IBM/Lenovo: Track Point
HP/Compaq: PointStick
NEC: NX Point
Sony: Pointing Stick
Fujitsu: StickPoint, QuickPoint
Dell: Track Stick
Toshiba: Accupoint
Acer: Finetrack
Anyway, when you sa y"Came off", do you mean: "the rubber/foam sleeve popped off", or do you mean "the enture pointer assembly snapped off"?
The sleeve itself is normally replacable, and should be dirt cheap. However, if the entire thing snapped off then you'll most likely need to replace the keyboard itself (the pointer thing is part of the keyboard, and not a seperate component)
either way it's not terribly difficult, but replacing the keyboard is obiously more complicated since on most systems it involves taking the laptop casing apart to get access to it.

All I know is I hate touchpads and I wish I had one of the red joystick things <-- there you go.
i always plug a mouse into my old laptop, i might give one of the 360 analogue sticks a go as a mouse, just to see how dog slow it is in comparison
I always refer to laptop pointers as the "devils nipple" and "satans baldspot".
I can use them but i swear much more than when i use a mouse.
