Who the hell wants an FPS where all you can do is throw boxes around?
You're probably missing the point: this kind of games are platform/puzzles, just in 1st person view. It's not that any 1st person view game must necessarily be a shooter, nor everyone wants to play FPS's.
Portal in this respect reaches excellency, and unless you are looking for a game which provides a bodycount it's a far better deal than Half Life 2: Episode 1 & 2 (which are very flat design-wise compared to Half Life and Half Life 2).
Anyway I agree that the videoclip provides lots of boxes. :)
I can't say much about the gameplay or level design from the movie, but the overall atmosphere looks very good though.
EDIT: and GLAdos is more than enough as far as NPC's go... believe me, Portal doesn't need any more than that! it's one of those rare well-written characters in modern game history.
