I soldiered on and bought it. I was hoping someone else would.
Not a bad game - it is a Torque one.
It is a sort of base building game crossed with Dungeon Siege/Diablo roaming the land killing monsters and claiming territory.
Some good ideas.
You cannot just build as and what you want, when you want. I instantly cheated and gave myself loads of money, but found I had to play by the rules.
Your town employs people - people with professions (guards, merchants, herbalists, farmers, trappers, blacksmiths, Wizards, etc) visit your town and offer their services. Their reason to join you is based on money, the status of your town, facilities in your town, etc. You then build their house/place of work.
You can improve/upgraded their places of work - even branch off in different directions - a herbalist can be an alchemist or a doctor, etc.
You can then get anybody in your town to join you as you go around the land killing monsters. You can equip people in your town with stuff you find or stuff your town produces.
The growth of your town relies on you securing areas of the map, such as stone, herbs, metal, wildlife, etc - then you can upgrade buildings accordingly and attract new people to your town.
It's a pretty good arcade-like RPG.
Lacks depth in both areas (base building and RPG fighting); however, it is fun.
For the price, I recommend it. I think it is about £12-13 UK Sterling
EDIT:
Actually, it doesn't lack depth in base building - it is somewhat better than a lot of RTS games - it lacks depth compared to a sim-type city building game. Personally, I think it is okay - but some reviews make this point.
My GF watched the trailer and has decided to buy it straight away, she's a sucker for new RPG's like that.
It's certainly not a bad game for the price.
There is no manual or instructions; however, they have added a manual to the website.
Most of it is logical to RTS/RPG games - but the game has some interesting ideas and twists and you realise things as you play.
The games are somewhat lengthy - they are randomally created lands, so no two games are the same. I am playing the short game and have been playing for a day and a bit. I'd assume a long game may take several days to finish it.
I am not big on 3D, but this game looks really good. However, I refuse to buy anything using Steam's DRM.

Tilted Mill is working on a content update for Hinterland to be released in a week or so. Details on the update will be released really soon, so be sure to check back![quote]
Ooh, I wonder what this is?
That's a Torque game?!?!? Just goes to show that it doesn't matter what language/engine you use. It's all about the design/graphics/gameplay/ingenuity!!!!
I just noticed it's by the same developer that did "SimCity Societies", good to see professional studios using Torque.
"Available as a cheap download game from Steam" 19.95 doesn't seem cheap(er), seems the norm?
It is in UK money - I paid in US Dollars.
