Free Anti-Spyware app?

Firstly, please bare in mind that I'm a bit of a donkey when it comes to this kind of thing!!

I've recently got some malicious crap on my PC which brings up errors every time I try to access files on my windows drive (c) I get a message :



When I click NO firefox loads this page ..

I've run AVG / Adaware and it's picked up nothing. Any help much appreciated.

Spybot Search & Destroy ( www.safer-networking.org ) is pretty good, so is SuperAntiSpyware ( http://www.superantispyware.com ) (Yeah, hokey name... It also takes forever to do a full system scan, but it is very thourough.)

ComboFix has also served me well in the past, getting rid of some annoying jobbies that every other thing I'd tried had not.

There's also another good one (perhaps mentioned in these very forums) that starts with 'M', but I don't seem to ever be able to remember its name. If I do, I'll edit this and tell you.

[edit] Aah yes, found it. Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (catchy name). Has also found and removed stuff otherwise not found or removed by the likes of Spybot, Ad-aware or Trend Micro's online Housecall.

This is the reason I now use Linux to browse the net.

Last time I had to fight spyware, I used Hitman Pro. It uses a combination of programs to solve the issues. It was very effective, and it's free.

I like to use this website:

They are extremely helpful in helping you get this kind of crap cleaned up. Usual process is to post a log file, and someone will usually tell you what to do within a day.

There are also a few stickies there with some recommended programs to run/scan for things.

As markcw says, it's a fake alert (scareware).

Your AdAware scans would pick up those problems if they were real.

I use Windows Defender. It's picked up just one thing on my system in over 3 years!

Hotcakes: That's doesn't mean that you're clean, it's just as likely because Windows Defender isn't very good. ;-)

Why not try MalwareBytes, Hotcakes? Maybe it could find something Windows Defender can't.

Such as... its own arse with both hands and a diagram?

Is Windows Defender that bad?

So I'm told. I always have it turned off anyway.

That reminds me of someone, except their arse isn't what they were looking for ^_^

If I were to bother installing anything it would probably be something I have heard of before.
