Ok im just wondering what kinda systems are out there in use, It might not be the "average" spec being that you are all coders but it would be interesting to see.

I will start (more of a gamer than coder lately)

I know Valve did a survey ages back and it was pretty low spec, not sure if they have done another one yet.

It's the people still using CGA which is holding us. Think of all the effects we could have if IBM started shipping computers with a VGA...

Snixx: Coders used to have to have a much better system config than the system their software was designed to run on. These days, lower-spec or same-spec machines can be used for both dev and release.

It's possibly more useful to have a better spec, but this tends to be more about ease of development to which, arguably, more than one monitor gives most benefit.

Having the fastest CPU and HD brings compile time down, but unless you are working on a supremely large project, this shouldn't really be an issue.

Genexi2: Yes, SLI is available on a number of enthusiast/gamer laptops. Battery times are, as expected, dreadful. In fact, my 9-cell battery is unable to sustain enough current to fully drive the graphics cards, the system BIOS clocks the GPU's down to a crawl when away from AC power, to avoid damaging the battery.

I throw in my silent G4 Mini with OSX 10.4.11, 1.25GHz G4 (the finest PowerPC Apple used), 32MB ATI 9200 visualisation power (16MB for each eye), 1 GB of RAM (i can store my porn in RAM!) and a truly everlasting 42949672960 Bytes HD. It connects with a Logitech mouse, an IBM keyboard (the keyboard), a Sony TFT (over 1 million pixels) and from time to time with my iPOD, my camera or my NordLead3 via Midex, yeah!
