Ghostbusters
Who you gonna call? Seriously, who are you going to call now that one of the more anticipated games in the Vivendi line-up has been canned? C’mon… Bill Murray was signed on and everything! Despite original assurances that the game would find a release our mail is that it has been canned. Surprisingly though, rumours have begun to appear suggesting that a third Ghostbusters film is set to be made, so perhaps the cast decided to go ahead with the idea anyway in cinematic form. Which means in some form the game would probably see the light of day eventually as a tie-in… maybe. Who cares did you hear that? New Ghostbusters film!

This is unbelievable!!! It was going to be the first good Ghostbusters game, I was even going to buy it!

and we shouldnt have had to wait the 10 odd years for the 2nd movie (even if it wasnt as good) and another 10sih for the alleged 3rd

This is gutting. Personally, I think Ghostbusters is one of the best films of all time. The teasers I saw for this game look really good. I can't believe it's canned.

shame, but maybe the game was no good to play OR one yeah there's another movie due, wooo!

Damn, it received a lot of attention since the first youtube videos released years ago (followed by copyright issues), and it seemed in an advanced state of development by now.

Personally, I'm more worried than happy about a third Ghostbusters movie. When Dan Aykroid tries to raise again a franchise it usually ends up in tears (Ghostbusters 2 and Blues Brothers 2000 weren't exactly masterpieces). On the other hand, the game looked wonderful and already was in a playable state judging by the interviews and movies.

GAME EDIT: it was actually scheduled for halloween 2008 and delayed to early 2009, so it was in fact almost ready. The game was cancelled due to the Blizzard / Activision merge. Hopefully, they'll find another publisher before the movie production studios decide to can it in favour of a poor and uninspired tie in (which IMO is unlikely due to copyright issues... now that the movie is in the works, I doubt Vivendi / Blizzard / Activision / Whatever wants to lose the rights in favour of another publisher).

MOVIE EDIT: it looks like the movie will be a reboot of the franchise in the vein of Batman, Superman and the upcoming Star Trek (god help us, being directed by J.J. Abrahams). The original authors are aware and involved in the project, but probably only marginally.

Yeh I hadn't heard a single bad preview impression of this game, it's amazing it was chucked.

Uhm, Destructoid reported that a Vivendi PR said, for what it's worth:
It is not cancelled and will not be canceled

And at the moment, for Tim Schafer's pleasure, Brutal Legend as well is absent from the five franchises that Activision is allowed to follow after the merge.

Joistiq has some more detailed info:
A spokesperson for Sierra confirmed that, "First and foremost, the game is absolutely not canceled." But does it have a publisher? "[Sierra] is reviewing its options regarding those titles that it will not be publishing," we were told.

I don't know how much it is reassuring though. Ironically, Ghostbusters was the only game I was interested from the whole Activision franchise.

And a week before that:

Someone at official at Sony emailed me over the weekend - Sony should be announcing shortly (no date, but let’s say in the next two weeks, maybe) that they are in the final steps of locking in their new publishing partner for the Ghostbusters video game.

Well, it's been longer than two weeks, but red tape can be very long indeed.

The original authors are aware and involved in the project, but probably only marginally.

They have script writers from The Office, so I hold little hope for the movie =]

the reboot of batman worked cos after loosing keaton and burton the franchise did take nose dive after nose dive and i wouldnt have been surprised if one of the batman actors quit mid shoot and wed have batman a for the first half then batman b the second and some shoddy plastic surgery story to cover up the fact that bruce wayne now looks so different

ghostbusters however, im not too sure if it would work without the original cast, but the original cast werent young first time round, so unless they are now tech support for the newer generation (that theyve had to subsequently hire)i think id skip it and keep on pretending that the 2nd movie didnt exist

keeping with movies and sequels
blair witch 2 would have been a better movie (but still just about good) if it WASNT posted as a sequel and they took the blair witch stuff out rewriting the story marginally

and as for the new Dr Who, i feel that it should have been a reboot too, let the audience know the old stories etc but let the newer viewers see daleks and cyber men for the first time with the new doctor, least davros didnt look like neighbours' nell mangle this time round ;)

tech support for the newer generation (that theyve had to subsequently hire)

That's exactly how I see it, you'd have the old gang working part time at GB HQ and also doing they're own thing, while a new team go out doing the ghostbusting work. Egon and Ray would spend all their time back at HQ being geeks while peter and winston take part time work elsewhere. the new gang get into big trouble, then the old team have to step in to help out. It could work out really well if they cast it right.

Oh, and Slimer needs to be in it too, cause he could give some good comic value.

I saw Ghostbuster Screenshot and it look good but it is wasted to canned it after all the work they been doing!!!

From my understanding, the game was pretty much completed and in QA.

Activision's website still has a launch center for it, and their forum is still pretty active.

I'd not say it was dead yet.

Anyone ever play the first Activision Ghostbuster's game by David Crane on the C-64? What an awesome game. And the guy did all of it, start to finish, graphics, sound, game in something like 3 months...
