Widescreen Resolutions (List yours here)

I'm doing research on past, present and future widescreen modes. This is the list of the most common native resolutions I've found:

allthough my monitor is 5:4 my card lists 1280*768 as a selectable video mode clicked it by accident once when going back to full size god it was nasty

my 22" widescreen is best at 1680x1050 anything else is pointless on the screen as pixels are doubled or missing!.

20": 1680x1050
24": 1920x1200 & 1920x1080 (HDTV)

A few 17" models also used 1440x950.

3360 x 1050 (dual 22")

But if you don't count dual configs, then it's 1680x1050 obviously..

1280x800 on my laptop monitor and
1280x768 when I use my tv instead

funny how ST's and NTSC amigas were widescreen yet never looked it on TV's (mind you the whacking great big boarder around the ST didnt help nor the fact that PAL amigas were 256 down and anything else was just the uppermost part of the tv screen)

but 320*200 (16:10) has been around for years waiting for monitors to finally catch up ;)

1440*900 on my 17" Laptop.

1280x800 (laptop)

..and 1280x1024 on my ancient 98 machine, and 1024x786 on my notebook.

ahem 5:4 and 4:3 arnt your average WIDESCREEN aspect ratios ;)

Do note that my 98 machine's 1280x1024 mode is displayed on one of my 22" widescreens.. ^_^ (yes: with blurry pixels, but my geforce4mx doesn't do 1680x1050)

1280x768 on my laptop, 1440x900 on my desktop.

My laptop is a Gateway MX3225
Video card is VIA/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP

24" - 16:10 - 1920X1200 (my main monitor)
14.4" - 16:10 - 1440x900 (MacBook Pro display)

Don't forget 16:9 resolutions - they're not so common, but they probably will be soon:

13.1" - 1366x768
13.1" - 1600x900

1440x900 on iMac. Note that there are also such things as `stretched modes` where a widescreen display will let you use a mode like 1024x768 but with the aspect ratio of widescreen, stretching the image to fill the whole screen. I have that for 800x600 and 640x480 too. You could then say those modes are widescreen modes also.

My 17" Sony laptop has a 1920x1200 Widescreen display.

That's silly. Stretching a 5:4 or 4:3 resolution to fit a 16:10 screen doesn't change the resolution. That would be like me saying my monitor runs at 15,000,000 x 15,000,000 because I can fit a picture of those dimensions on the screen.

i remember when some video's had gyped widescreen stretched to full screen instead of pan and scanned, egg shaped balls and stuff like that

and although i posted it first you still havnt added 1280*768 which IS different enough to 1280*800 to warrant being on the list

what would be good is listing which is 16:9 or 16:10 too as most tvs are 16:9 but pc's are 16:10 and alot of modern tv's have VGA in

(The more amazing thing is that every single resolution has its own unique name... We all know VGA and SVGA, but what about the difference between WQXGA, WSXGA+, WHSXGA and the other dozens out there? :-)

John, yea using 1024x768 at 16:10 doesn't change the `resolution` as such but it is still something to consider because if you don't think of it as a widescreen mode then what does widescreen really mean? It means anything with a much wider horizontal aspect than normal 4:5 or 5:4 aspects, in general. When I launch a number of games they often open at that stretched mode in widescreen format. I don't know why that seems so silly. It's not a pure widescreen mode in the sense that the pixel aspect ratio or dot pitch remains the same, but it does take up the full width of the screen.

I still miss the resolution 1360x768, my Samsung 32" tv is using that when a PC is connected.
