It'll work for every example. With a bit of work, you can show it's the usual algorithm, just written down differently.

Very interesting but I see no advantage in speed or room on paper =P

This would be much more useful in 3d where you could project lines out from each of the points of intersection, representing the resulting number. If you look at the second example, which has 5 digits, the points belonging to each digit are arranged in vertical lines.

There's still carrying 10s to worry about, but you could just do that periodically when the diagram gets unmanageable.

A lot of counting to do. Multiply 9x9 using that method. Ouch!

There is no need to look for usefulness.
It explains why the human brain will always be superior to a chip...

Of course it works, it is just multiplication.
