It sounds like a bunch of southend chavs writing on a wall. A more professional outfit would state (basically) something like; You got hacked, to find out how please deposit -a lot of money- in -this- account for some good security advice.

I'm suprised that some of the controls of the accelerator are in a network connected to WAN. There must be a good reason for it, since there's a lot of money involved in running the tests.

This was apparently done for publicity, but now as it has been proven that the facility is hackable, it just requires one idiot hacker to cause real problems.

I wonder why those people don't hack the main systems of Visa/MasterCard and all large banks and delete all credit information. --That-- would make a difference in the world, especially for those drowning in debt...

The cynic in me would like to suggest that this is could be a CERN PR stunt designed as a scapegoat should things go wrong in a way they were unable to predict. Or thought was safe. Much easier to blame an anonymous bunch of hackers for the end of the world etc...

2600 is probably relating to the 'operator mode' 2600 Hertz tone in the old US telephone system. Not sure why a Greek crew would state 2600 - unless they are bent or something.

Half the world used to use CERN as a proxy; however, not sure anyone should poke around in CERN whilst these experiments are going on.

The banks are quite capable of collapsing the economy all by them selves. I heard it on the news today that a big US bank has gone bust sending shock waves through the stock market.

Yeah, but the reason for that is all the outstanding American credit. People have borrowed irresponsibly (among many other reasons for the downturn) and cannot pay, so its all now biting the bullet. If people cannot pay their debts and declare bankruptcy (essentially freeing them from debt, but financially scaring them for life) then the banks cant recover the funds either, especially if no one can afford to buy the repo'd property at the right price. If too many people do it then the bank goes bust, if too many banks go bust... etc, which is more or less what has happened. Its a vicious circle.

As I understand it, this all comes down to the distributed network for data processing. Interesting that outside folk have access to input commands to the actual hardware. I hope they'll rethink that. Couldn't people just politely ask an administrator like the good old days? :/

It probably comes down to the fact that Visa, Mastercard, etc. operate more like a co-operative/association of banks than some massive central storage facility.
