In the best sense of the Fast Show, this week I've mainly been playing:

Tank Universal - brilliant 3D game in B3D
PGR2 - also brilliant racer on the original XBox, get it for a song
Halo 2 - good 2 player fun

Its "mostly', not 'mainly'....

...anyhooo... nothing, really. Had a game of Spider Solitaire about half an hour ago. Other than that, all I've played this week is my own game.

Unreal Tournament III (Xbox 360), the single player campaign actually. It's my latest purchase and I love it - it's still Unreal Tournament, but looks and plays fantastic on the console.

I'm waiting for the Xbox 360 releases of Dead Space, Gears of War 2, Call of Duty - World at War, Fallout 3 and maybe a few others, but all of them are due within the next three months.

I installed linux again and noticed battle for wesnoth on the package manager. playing it now

Hmmm, when i had some time i've played:

o A little bit of Doom3 because i like the design and the mood in the game. It plays so smooth.
o Gravitron 2 which is nice but hard. I've just recently stumbled over it. As i'm writing this i feel the desire to play Pitfall again.
o The Strong Bad Episode1 Demo, which sucked, just to make sure that i was right with my assumptions.
o Own stuff built in Unity because it's fun playing and altering things.

Oh, I've had the Defender of the Crown title music stuck in my head for the past two days now. Does that count?

Wouldn't mind but I haven't played the bloody game in probably two decades.

Recently.. nothing!!!

However, a few days ago I picked up a 2nd hand XBOX from my local game shop for £9.99 - What a bargain!!

I went on eBay and grabbed some classic XBOX games like halo, halo 2, PGR2, Buffy (yes I know), splinter cell, obi-wan + others. I also purchased an action replay so I could softmod it.

Today arrived the action replay and splinter cell so I went about modding it. It went pretty smoothly and I now have XMBC with the xbox connected via a spare wireless router I had kicking around to my laptop.

It brilliant!!! I can stream movies direct to my TV and most of all I can now also play some classic amiga and snes games (just finished FTP'ing them to the xbox hard drive).

So over the next week I'll be playing the xbox classics (as listed above) and some oldies like flashback, pinball dreams, myth, ATR, Goal 2, pushover + more.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky - just analysing what media I need from it - not too much really, it is pretty much like the original.

Space Siege - mediocre.
Spore - mediocre.
Force Unleashed Demo (PS3) - mediocre, won't be buying the full game.

X-Com UFO Defense - quite a challenge

Galactic Civilizations II - Good, very much a modern day Ascendancy (if anyone remembers that)
Spore - Still undecided on this one.

Nothing really. No, I tell a lie. I had a day when I couldn't work last weekend and I played pretty much right through Dead Reefs. It was quite good. The voice acting is reasonable, the dialogue unexceptional, and the graphics are nothing to write home about, but the puzzles are very logical, fair and varied.

I'm not really looking forward to anything new before Fallout 3, and I will probably postpone playing that so it doesn't get in the way of work.

Woops, forgot to mention my 'own' game in development - multiplayer 3d racing. ATR , Hmmmm.... was it this one:-

I'd tuns of fun playing this... with a kempston joystick, it was only 13 years ago it was released!

Stainless Steel 6 mod for Total War:Medieval 2

Brilliant mod. Fixes the strategy AI so that it actually allows for working alliances and greater strategic depth.

I've noticed this with the last couple of Total War games - that the initial release has been borked in favour of mindless action and its been up to the modders to re-instate the deeper strategy.

Hope Empires doesn't follow the trend.

Yup, that's the one :) - Played it tonight and sheeshhh, I'm nowhere near as good as I was years ago. It's nice to finally have pure PAL 50hz silky smooth scrolling again. The XBOX Amiga emulator (winuaex) is top notch.

Metal Gear Solid 4

I've also been doing some iPhone gaming with Billy Frontier, Enigmo, and Cro-Mag Rally.

Round that all off with a few stints of online COD4 with my new cousins, online Smash Bros. with an old friend who lives across the country, and some old school SNES gaming. That my friends is a gaming week eh?

I seem to have stumbled onto a pattern of playing a lot of games in the fall just to remind myself why I love this industry. Then I get back to work. I promise to one day deliver a must play title ;)

Assassin's Creed and COD4, though games seem to take the least of my time nowadays.

Still waiting for Spore to arrive in the mail.

Same as Dabhand - nothing, been a while since I've played a game, and when I have it is usually something I've been tinkering with myself.

Did play some Disciples II strategy game a while ago, and have briefly thought about playing some of Medieval Total War (first version) just for the battles but cannot be bothered going through the process of installing it all again (since I'll probably spend more time installing than playing).

Lots of Lux while I've been waiting for BT to connect my ADSL, and on the xbox silly amounts of Civilization: Revolution.

My flatmates discovered my nostalgia edition of Risk a couple of weeks ago, so we've been playing that a lot as well.

@Qube, how'd you get Amiga games running on your XBox then I'm intrigued.... I can connect my XBox via Ethernet but haven't explored the Miggy side of it.

@Gfk, dunno what defender of the crown music went like, it's the music to paper boy thats memorable to me, do doo doo do-do doot, do do do-doo do doot.

@Matty, my sons playing ROme Total War the now, I played it until I'd nearly conquered a lot of europe but it kept crashing on me - gave up.


I've just looked at the Amiga emulator, and I may finally be able to market my bike computer software.... oh .... wait... Garmin already beat me to it - & all inside of a watch!. But does Garmin's software run in Blitz Basic 2.1 - No I here you say. Cyclopro will see the light of day........ The AMiga is dead.... long live the Amiga (on the XBox...) This'll lead me back to the small headache of getting software of my Miggy, finally....

Ive been playing TF2 (Team Fortress 2 - best mp ever!) and downloaded Super Mario RPG for the Wii (Virtual Console) last week...

and thats about it ATM... did play COD4 (great mp) for a while and looking forward to Fallout 3 (although the videos kind of remind of Oblivion in the Future).

I haven't had a decent play of a game in a disturbingly long time. :/

I'm so close to playing ATR in WINUAE, how do I swap disks though ? I've populated the disk swapper with adf1 & adf2, press start , but once the emulator has started I can't seem to change the disk... Sussed it, it is end + F1, now I just need to suss the keys..., right sussed the keys, I came last.... How I've lost my touch!

You need to softmod your xbox (it's the easiest way - gooogle xbox softmod) and replace the standard MS Dashboard. One of the methods requires, splinter cell, action replay cart + memory card and the required software off the net. After soft modding you FTP XBMC (it's the best) and your old XBOX has a new lease of life :)

I've actually got a spare XBox that I may softmod up this afternoon cheers qube! Halo2 and PGR2 still gets plenty of air time in our living room.

Anyways, kids have just been playing Quak, an Amiga Team17 game - good clean old fashioned 2D fun!

Quak is being remade, I think there's a demo on Indiegamer.

I've been playing one game with the kids, still on Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii, nearly finished it. It's a huge game.

Grey, I was addicted to that game, I finished it ages ago, but it took forever to finish, best zelda game yet in my opinion (followed by majora's mask and OOT)

At the moment I've been playing Supersmash bros. Brawl. Its quite good because it has a wifi feature so you can play with people across the net.

Stalker...there was a time that I didn't like this game, found it very alienating...but now I find it involving...It's a marmite game.

Riglord Saga 2, is my favoriote game ever, and Baroque is probably a
close second. Lol, that game is so creepy!
I understand that a baroque remake recently came out for the Wii,
and PlayStation 2, so if you have either of those systems, I suggest
you look into buying it.

Space Empires 5 - amazing game, very long winded but bloody good when it gets going

Yahfree: yeah I often wait for games to become cheaper as used titles before buying, and I did that with Zelda so I've only been playing it since my birthday in June. My boys love it, we've all been on the adventure together. The double grappling hook is great.

Zelda was the first game we got of the Wii (we got the Wii when it was first released!)... it took me over 60 hours to complete it....

Another great Wii game is Super Mario Galaxy, although I havent played it in a while... I "completed" it, but havent got all the Stars yet...

Oh Mario Kart Wii is great too! Best with friends as with most Wii games (although online is cool)

Haven't touched TeamFortress2 lately which I used to play daily for the last few months, primarily because I can't be arsed to dual-boot into WinXP just to play a single game these days (perhaps I should consider purchasing CrossOver).

Otherwise, I've been slowly playing through Castlevania:Symphony of the Night which I purchased over PSN on my PS3. Fun game, but looks like absolute crap with the hardware filtering/scaling on everything.
(no option on the damn console to keep everything linear and pixel-perfect)

Quak was such a great game!

I'm playing Titan Quest. As an ex-Diablo II addict I feel like I've played the game before - which is probably why I overlooked it on release. But it's still a lot of fun. Very impressed at how the graphics engine smoothly manages scene transitions - looks very pretty indeed *provided* your gfx card can handle it all.

@Therevills: Yeah my zelda playtime is 50 hours but I think it increments even if the game is on a inventory screen or whatever (we sometimes leave it and eat dinner etc). Galaxy was one of the best games I'd ever player, I loved every minute, finished it except for the final 20 extra stars that I can't be bothered with.

I've been playing OverLord on the Xbox360. It's Pikmin with a dark side - excellent stuff. Makes a nice change to play the bad guy.

I'm with you, I picked up my first xbox for 20 quid and it was bundled with dvd player add on & 4 games. Still plenty of mileage in it.

I'm curious as to how much a keyboard and mouse for the old xbox might cost....I have a project or 2 in mind - google here I come!, an old xbox as a backup server maybe?

@Yahfree, yeah Super Smash Bros is pretty cool, I've a wireless router however not quite got my Wii hooked up yet. I imagine its not too difficult.

Nice find Grey, the page links to a Spectrum format of the game, the 128K version was obviously needed to support the superior graphics when compared to the C64:-

the sinclair C4 (the version before the C5) must've had a monitor on board allowing you to play Commodore 64 games, that might've sold. {;-)

Yeah the spec version really looks like it sucks....

The Amstrad CPC version of The NeverEnding Story was pretty good too. Loved the intro music. The adventure itself was pretty tough, but good fun none-the-less. And the graphics were nice too (at the time).

Oooh I played and bought that not long ago. Not off of steam, but. Excellent title. Make sure you play with a controller on PC... and def get the Raising Hell expansion.

I'm holding my nose and playing Boiling Point:Road to Hell 'cause I love sandbox games - but it's pretty stinky!

Early on, I go to see the editor of the local paper.

While he's talking to me, there's a rat in the corner of his office that's flicking backwards and forwards like a rubber band. It's just like the Matrix - but with rats. When I walk towards it, it disappears into thin air.

Suddenly there's the sound of a helicopter outside and then gunfire and an explosion. The editor's continuing to talk as though nothing's happening. I go and look out the window when he's done and there's a helicopter burning in the middle of the street! But no-one takes the slightest notice of it. Oh wait, its caused a car to detour straight into a brick wall. Now the driver's backing up and trying to drive through the wall - again, repeatedly. A man walking by reading a newspaper gets run over by the car and after a moment, gets up and appears to be angry. The car backs over him again.

Later I get frustrated at how everyone wants thousands of pesos just for basic info, so I decide to storm the local drug lord's villa singlehandedly. This is kind of fun but at one point, I'm having a shootout over a pool deck while bikini girls sit around as though nothing's happening. When I get inside and locate the drug lord, he congratulates me on mowing down his guards and wants to help me - for more thousands of pesos! I consider paying him with a bullet but wonder if it'll break the game.

I don't play many video games, but lately I've kinda gotten into Alien Arena 2008. Its free, and the kind of shooter I like (futuristic, non realistic). It works for Vista and that made me happy.

@MadJack, that sounds pretty stinky alright... Will have to check out OVERLORD - aaah, it seems that its next generation - a bit Fable esque.
