MS Office Installation Query

I've recently bought MS Office and installed it on my main computer. But, I have two computers and would like to install it on both.

Before I try to contact MS for an answer, does anyone here have experience of this? Is it permitted? Do I need to buy a new license?

You need a second license.

You could always stick openoffice on your other computer.

Yeh, I've got OpenOffice on it which is pretty good. And it's mainly the kids that use that one.

I think I'll still check with MS, though, because you see some versions as 3 users.

It depends on the flavor of Office that you bought -- supposedly the retail version of Office 2007 home And Student allows installation on up to three computers.

I don't know what the rules are for the other editions, but IIRC they used to have deals that you were entitled to install it twice (once on a laptop and once on a desktop) provided only a single instance was in use at a time.

Microsoft should be able to tell you the specifics on what you're allowed to do with whatever release you purchased.

That's correct. That's my current setup with '07 Ultimate.

Since Office 2007 for Windows and Office 2008 for Mac, the Home and Student editions can be installed on up to three machines and the other editions (Standard, Professional, Ultimate, whatever) on a desktop and a notebook. Read your product's EULA, it should include that information.

There are many different ways to license Microsoft Office 2007 which will let you do what you want to do, but for retail home users generally the rule is one install per purchased copy. However check that your employer is not part of the Home Use Scheme that allows employees a full copy of all Office software the use at work at hom for ~£17.

DarkHeart, the Home and Student Editions explicitly allow for three installations, in any country, and they are no longer limited to educational purposes. The main difference to the Standard Edition is that Entourage in the Mac edition won't connect to an Exchange Server and that the Windows version does not even have Outlook.

The 'home use' licenses are only valid as long as you stay with the company that had this agreement with Microsoft. I've recently left my employer, and now I can dump my 'home use' Office:Mac 2004 version.

I've just heard back from MS support and I can activate on 2 computers, irrespective of whether they are desktop or laptop etc.
