now.. what if they photographed the same object from a different angle, they might, using some clever technique, be able to deduct whether it's one solid object, or two different ones..
(like the example she mentioned, with the plant growing on the outside of the brick wall..)

It's a really clever idea for photographic textures!
You only have to set light direction and angle and you're done.
And anyone can almost already do it with a paint tool and a photocamera (after all it's very similar to the filters applied to approximate specular and bump maps from photos, only with a real depth map applied).
I would prefer Filter Forge.
