I don't think its >THE< hardest out there, but it's hard to beat, they did a good job.

What's your opinion on what's the hardest game you've played?

Hardest being -

Its possible to beat, but extremely hard.

Shadow of the Beast.

Its difficulty comes not only from it being stupidly hard from the off, but also it got very boring very quickly.

Choice of 2 for me. Both on the C64

1. Ghost 'n Goblins
Hard as nails. The enemies such as plants spit stars directly at you. Even when you are climbing ladders

2. Green Beret
You had to be one too to beat this game. Harder than grannies home-made tea cakes

Not the hardest game but definately a part in the arcade game which was impossible to complete without dying 50 times and that was willow.

The begining part where you're on the cart and it travelling fast. You get hammered by arrows and enemies. I guess they made it that hard to force you to insert more coins. It was literally impossible to complete without spending just £4 on that one bit.

Hardest? Prolly one of those insane Japanese shmups.

Rise of the Robots. It was also a crap game.

Rise of the Robots. It was also a crap game.
That wasn't hard at all. You could shove your opponent into the edge of the screen and kick him in the head all day long.

The fact that they were bigging it up pre-release by saying it had AI which learned what sequences of moves you used, only served to make it even more of a laughing stock.

I concur that Shadow of the Beast was hard, and it didn't help that it had bad loading times and disk swapping, so you died and had to load it all up again. It was stinky that game.

I actually got pretty far on the C64 ghosts n goblins BUT it was after playing it for hours/days/weeks...

Here's a stinky hard game: Airwolf on C64!

Hey RType was pretty hard too. Pretty much any arcade game on level 2 is hard so you loose your credit.

Two that spring to mind:
-Splatterhouse was pretty tough after like level 3.
-Shadow of the beast as GFK said was just stupid (awesome gfx/music tho, especially SOTB2)

My absolute favorite that i could complete on 10p (1 credit 1 player) was Sagia (also known as darius2, that two monitor wide screen affair) Anyone remember that? I would go into a kind of total trance, and when i snapped out of it, tears would be streaming down my face from having my eyes open. As the game had a reputation for being hard as hell there was usually a small crowd. (Its about the only game i was ever awesome at :D)

Oh you want a hard game? Try Dungeons of Fear: I'll tell you right now, between the maze of the dungeon, the deadly decisions, and mini games: you'll never beat it.

One person to date so far :)

The websites in the sig. I dare you.

I was, erm, too young for those tactics :) Was probably about 9 or 10 when i played that actually.

Does anyone remember Rick Dangerous?

That game was practically impossible to complete.

Army Moves.

Navy Moves.

Anything else with 'Moves' in the title.

The irony was they were so hard because the vehicle you were trying to control could barely move at all!

St00pid games.

Jesus, yeah... Green Beret stupidly hard I agree with that one.

WizBall.

I think I beat both of the Rick Dangerous games...

WizBall... I haven't heard about that in many, many years.. or Army Moves for that matter (which is a good thing, because it sucked hard!).

Hands down, the hardest game ever is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Infocom.

Penn & Tellers Desert Bus, no contest.

The Last Ninja had those stupidly hard pixel perfect jumping puzzles that you could pretty much only complete by pure dumb luck, or trial and error.

Impossible Mission was also pretty hard and required quite a lot of practice to go through.

I reckon jet set willy was impossible to complete, never herd of anyone finally being allowed into bed :/

Team 17's Project X

Both Rick Dangerous games wern't that hard, I finished both. You want hard? Try Solomon's Key,Sacred Armor of Antirad or Amaurote, all of those were close to impossible. Other games that just wore you down were stuff like Batman and Head over Heels, did anyone manage to get to the end of those and complete all the worlds on the original version?

Darkheart

Nah, Project X was easy.

Penn & Tellers Desert Bus, no contest.

Agreed!

Thing on a Spring was hard.

The world hardest game would be Thunderforce 4!

Trantor!

Last Ninja 3,
IO

Yes, Ghost 'n Goblins, and Green Beret. Green Beret was actually quite playable compared to Ghost 'n Goblins haha.

Navy Moves.. my brother bought that game (c64), yes it was very hard, the boat part was very difficult. The game had great music (by Jeroen Tel I think), I would start it up just to listen to the music.

It's funny how those difficult games are mostly old games.. they don't make them like that anymore ;). Even games like Half Life 2, if you don't know what you're doing, chances are you'll still stumble into the next level.

I reckon jet set willy was impossible to complete, never herd of anyone finally being allowed into bed :/
I completed it. And you *still* don't manage to get to bed. As soon as you jump on the bed he runs to the bathroom and goes head-first down the toilet.

The Last Ninja had those stupidly hard pixel perfect jumping puzzles that you could pretty much only complete by pure dumb luck, or trial and error.
Last Ninja was tricky, but not nearly as bad as Dragon's Lair.

Cybernoid was pretty hard too. Seems like most 8-bit games were stinkily hard. I was really punished by games as a kid, thank God games are easier now. Mind you, maybe it taught me perseverance...

Trantor!
Oh god yeah... Well... Not sure if it was hard or just crap to be honest... The things hovering around your head where you couldn't shoot them and just mindlessly going up and down lifts activating computer terminals... Lovely graphics though!

Yeah I remember that game, it looked like it was going to be ace but was boring.

This is the hardest game ever:

I reckon jet set willy was impossible to complete, never herd of anyone finally being allowed into bed :/
'Jet Set Willy' on the Amstrad was actually what was known as 'Jet Set Willy 2' on other platforms, and it couldn't be completed due to a couple of bugs. Software Projects actually released a poke for it that made it possible (but still rock-hard) to complete.

Oh god, I laughed till I had tears coming down my face at that Mario vid.

I've seen that video, I couldn't stop laughing the first time, the second time was still funny.

Butch hard guy (speccy)
Enigma force (speccy)
Brian Bloodaxe (speccy)
Frightmare (C64/Speccy)
Death (PC Dos) so stupidly difficult you could die within 10 seconds of starting the game.
Cobra (Speccy)

For me Green beret was quite easy :s

You notice its all the old games that were the hard ones?

For me the number#1 hardest game ever, would have to be
ShadowGate for the NES by kemco.

The games puzzles were just so insanely hard, that I still have yet
to beat the game.

Ghosts 'N' Goblins runs a close second.
My brother was skilled enough to make it all the way to level 3!
(And then he promptly died)

Other difficult games of note,

CyberNoid;For the NES

Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2;Both so impossibly difficult. After finally beating
the final boss in Ninja Gaiden 2, I was warped to part 2 of the boss
fight(Without being recovered) and quickly perished. So after I died,
I was warped all the way back to the start of the final level.

I was so angry, that I nearly threw my NES out the window. And have yet to play the game again, still being mad at it.

Captain Comic; It being impossible to hit some ground enemys, due to
the fact that you cannot duck and shoot, makes this poorly made NES
game somewhat difficult to win.

Jim Powers;SNES, Although the game was quite hard, I didn't mind it
because of the awesome soundtrack, and neat visuals.

Wizardry;NES, Wow this game is hard. WERDNAS maze is so complex
and trap filled, that even though I consider myself a pro when it comes
to Wizardry, I still find this game quite hard. And its sequels even harder.

The Mighty WERDNA(Lord Of Wizardry)

lol, try Civilization of Diety mode...I wonder if anyone's ACTUALLY (without cheating) ever beat it?

Deus Ex on Realistic mode is pretty hard too, but not impossible.

World's hardest game !... The one at the top of this thread, is enough to drive people to drink.

National lotto. Even how hard I try, never managed to complete it. ;)

Dragons Lair (orginal arcade), I don't think I ever timed a single move right.

Some of the Ultimate games on the spectrum were also very tough, Underwurld was as one of the most frustating games of all time, nightshade was horrible.

Darkheart - Armour of Antirad & Head over Heels : I completed both on the spectrum when they first came out, I probably had more patience then.

Blackbag, how long did it take you to complete Head over Heels? My old speccy would always overheat and crash before I could do more than 4-5 worlds...

Darkheart

Space Ace looked distrubing hard to me, so that i kept my coins for other arcades but i watched how others failed one after each other. Dragon's Lair was okay for me. :O)

The Human Race on the C64 was extremely hard - never did complete it.
Commando on said machine was also hard - took me years to complete it.
Secret Agent.
Turbocharge.

Head over Heels : I had a whatsit that dumped the machine memory to a floppy disc, so I could save and restart when necessary. So I probably didn't finish in one session.

The most heartbreaking part of the game was, you free all the slave worlds, free the blacktooth home world, then loose all your lives in that room near the exit with all the collapsing columns.

If you want to relive the pain there is a PC remake out there.....

This is another mario one I was going to mention. It's different from the one posted above.

Seen the first mario before, it's so funny.

By the way the loop is great! :O) Level 3...

And the game is great too, Level 4, Level 5, ...
