I bought myself a 4G ASUS EEE PC701 10 days ago and am very pleased with it. However, it gets alarmingly warm after about 30 minutes - and yesterday started making a strange whining sound at the same time (rather like a fan, though I can't believe there is enough room for one inside the incredibly small case!). Does anyone know if it's normal for these machines to get so hot, or do I need to take it back?
Hot Asus EEE PC701
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Hot Asus EEE PC701 Have you checked internal temperature? (Eg. using eeectl.)
It has a fan, so if everything is ok, that's probably what you're hearing.

Mine whines sometimes as well (the fan). It does get quite hot as well. You must remember that there is much less between you and the hot parts than a normal sized laptop. Maybe you are just aware of this. Don't forget to allow some circulation space around it (ie. don't rest it on a cushion on your lap etc).
I wouldn't rush back to the shop just yet. Wait till it breaks. :)

I believe that's normal for a 701. My 901 has been running quite silent... thus far ;)

No (I didn't know I could!) - but I will do later today.
