Car Engine sounds
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Car Engine sounds i havent found any good sample that suit my car game so ive used a loop of a industrial printing press that i play back at the wrong speed and then vary the pitch using code. it sounds ok, but id like something better but i find the sound commands very limited in blitz3d.
Funny, I actually have some great sounds for cars and trucks on an old game I have. Does anyone remember the 3D movie maker, where they give you characters, and you make a movie from microsoft? LOL Its actually a 95' game, but will still run on my XP. Give me a couple of days to rip it from the game, and send to you.
There is also, "Van, back-up" sounds, and truck start, police car etc. Do you need all of them?

thanks David....I really need sport car engine sound...its difficult to get any online, and even commercial one seems to be ok but there is no samples so i havent brought it..
Hmmm, I'll take a look around. Im not sure that game has that sound type (although it does have a screaching tire sound too) I'll get those sounds I have, and send it anyway. Some MAY be useful. Then, I'll look around (after work of course, running late LOL)
Oh ya, before I leave, I just remembered of a site, I used to go to for sounds, but cand remember the name offhand. The way I found it, was by going to www.dogpile.com , then search under audio for lets say,,,firetrucks, or guns etc. There was one site that always came up. for different sounds. I'll search after work.
NOTE: Dabz, if you come here, and read this, I belive I showed you this site too one time in chatroom at syntaxbomb (about a year ago) You liked the site too. Do you remember the site?

If you're 'doing' engine sounds, bear in mind that to get anything approaching nice-sounding, you need to layer two or three different sounds.
There's the main engine rev noise which should comprise 3 or 4 samples: "Engine idle", "Engine low rev", "engine medium rev", "engine high rev". You blend between them, depending on actual rev rate.
There's incidental sounds, which can depend entirely upon the speed of the car. The most notable would be the sound from the driveshaft/gearbox. As speed increases and depending on which gear is selected, you would normally hear a rising-pitch 'whine' from the gearbox.
You can go crazy and include tyre noise, wind noise, cracks and pops from debris hitting the undercarriage, 'sloshing' noise when tyres hit wet patches...
Having just one sample though, with no layering, makes the car sound really wimpy ;)

Not always - try grabbing the Ferrari sample used in Grand Prix Legends - it's a single looping wav but the overall effect is awesome.
You can get sound samples like these from any site that does GPL / GTR etc.. mods, for example Blackhole Motorsports - have a search in the mods section for various games and download some of the audio mod packs. You can't really use them commercially, but at least you'll have some great samples to play with.
Also, try the Xpand Rally demo, which has some great engine SFX wavs.

What is the license on that product? Is it legal for you to distribute the sound you 'rip'?

Hmmm, good question. I'll have to go and double check.
In the meantime, I found that site for ya on sounds. Some are royalty free too.
