Real racing in the virtual world in 5 Years time!
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Real racing in the virtual world in 5 Years time! The patented system his company is developing sucks
(sorry, couldn't resist) I don't really see that much value in realtime ray tracing. Most production renderers gave up on it and use a bunch of tricks to fake most of it and may only use it on closest reflection and refraction bounces if that.
You can get better results and cheat with your scene allowing for faster rendering without raytracing. Especially in games where you don't want to be bothered with blanking off huge sections of a level and paying a lot more attention to detail in order to make sure rays aren't getting in places they shouldn't and causing havoc with your lighting solution.
Lighting effects like realistic global illumination in realtime are far more usefull at producing subtle lighting effects than raytracing.

EvaK; RTFA - it's about trasmitting GPS data to position the computer controled cars in the game as the real world race is going on. It's nothing to do with graphics.
Looks like a really good idea, surprised no-one's thought of doing this sooner.

Are you able to play the re-runs? otherwise it would suck if you have to wait until theres a GP to play (and then get p..sed on by the pros in the first lap). :P
I dont really see how this would work as a "game" because you would be the only one suffering from collisions :D

there will be saved racing tracks, so you can perform it offline, as well as other features related to lag and automatic reposition of F1 car based on last/current position

My thoughts exactly... It says the AI will make the 'real' drivers drive round your car but I'd bet your testicles that if you get clipped or you clip another car you'll end up off the track not them... And of course... This is what you'd expect when they're driving off real time (ish) telementory. It's a nice idea, although I think gathering the driver data and creating a AI model of how the driver drives is probably going to work better.
At some stage cars will probably just start moving through you, for instance when you're cleverly blocking a car behind you, at first the AI will make sure the other car will not crash into you; but after 30 seconds the "real" car is already way ahead so the virtual car says "ok, you are blocking me nicely but ACTUALLY I am already way ahead of you because I am Michael Schumacher/Damon Hill (this is the "classic races" extension pack to the game), bye bye sucker". :)
lol, must have been really tired to misread that as ray tracing haha. Oh well.
The GPS idea is pretty cool.

There is no way that ray tracing will be real time any soon, but yeah maybe in 5 years it will get better so we can swith to using ray tracers
Funny that this has popped up as I was thinking of a solution like this for another smaller scale racing app.
