Truespace 7.6 free to all... I think.

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Truespace 7.6 free to all... I think.

I'm still trying to find if this is true or not. I got the email about 10 minutes ago and am reading the forums now.

From what I gather Truespace 7.6 is free for anyone (I think).

If this is true then I spent a hell of a lot of money on 7.1 for nothing. Also if it's true then Caligari being bought out by Microsoft has done wonders.

Can someone in the know please confirm if Truespace 7.6 is free for everyone or just to existing customers?

[edit]

Just waiting for confirmation on the Caligari forums but from what I've read it's totally free so anyone who was looking for a professional 3d dev tool can have Truespace 7.6, free. :)

If you're still seeing 7.5 here in the uk on the caligari website I've read on the Caligari forums that it is a DNS issue.

[edit 2] It's free. Here's a letter from Roman Ormandy, Caligari's CEO

Dear Caligari community member,

Today is an important day in the 23 year history of trueSpace. We are
releasing a major upgrade to our flagship product with trueSpace7.6,
bringing significant improvements in modeling, animation, rendering and
workflows, plus new direct export to Virtual Earth. Most of these you might
already expect if you’ve been following my regular Captain’s Blog posts at
http://forums1.caligari.com/truespac...read.php?t=893.
What you may not expect is that we are making trueSpace7.6 available to
everyone at no charge, in a giant step forward to bring high-end 3D
authoring tools to all who want them!

trueSpace7.6 is far more than a SketchUp-style 3D architectural modeling
tool. Instead, it provides a complete 3D authoring environment for any
type of 3D content creation, whether that’s images, animations, objects
for games, or content or worlds for online interactive shared spaces.
trueSpace7.6's modeling tools feature a variety of surface representations
including full polygonal editing, subdivision surface modeling, NURBS,
metaballs, and implicit surfaces. Those are supported by400+ modeling
tools like real-time Boolean operations with full construction history so
you can move subtracted parts of your design at any time during your work,
or even change a subtraction to an intersection.

trueSpace 7.6 also provides advanced surfacing tools like layered
materials, texture maps, normal maps, procedural materials, UVE
projections, real-time DX9 pixel shaders that include shaders to simulate
subsurface scattering, reflection, refraction, smoke, fire, water,
anisotropicshader, metallic paint, glass – and those are just the
real-time shaders!

The animation capabilities are even more impressive.trueSpace7.6 supports
key-frame and motion capture animation on fully hierarchical objects.
Key-frame animations can be seamlessly blended with procedural animations
and physical simulations, all of which can fully interact with each other.
This means you can have a walking character animated by key-frames getting
hit by a procedurally animated car and fly away in response to the
collision thanks to physical simulation.

In trueSpace7.6 you can also create fully articulated characters and
interact with them using full body IK with editable direct manipulation
widgets for joints (including physical stiffness), and apply physics
oranimated morphs for facial expressions.

If you want to create a photorealisticimagesor a video, then the built-in
Lightworks high quality offline renderer will give you spectacular
rendering results including soft shadows, raytracing, global illumination
in form of hybrid radiosity, image based lighting, caustics, tone mapping,
HDRI, anisotropic reflectance,multi-pass rendering to Photoshop layers,
motion blur, depth of field, lens flares etc.

trueSpace’s award-winning direct manipulation interface with its
easy-to-use 2D controls and 3D widgets has always been highly praised by
users and press alike. For version 7.6 we have streamlined many workflows
in extensive collaboration with our Beta testers. The UI is context-based
and fully configurable, including toolbars, panels, widgets, layouts and
projects. With universal drag-and-drop you can simply drop your model from
the 3D workspace directly into an e-mail, written document, etc, and vice
versa, clicking on the object in an e-mail will automatically open it in
trueSpace.

There are also a series of advanced editors. In addition to the 3D
workspace and modeling editors, there are a universal 2D node link editor,
a script editor,a non-linear animation editor, a material editor, a UV
editor, and more. Plug-ins are now accessible from the real-time 3D
workspace and we expect to release truly amazing plug-ins for trueSpace7.6
in the near future, as well as stimulate 3rd party creation of independent
products both free and commercial thanks to the availability of an SDK.
Finally, trueSpace7.6 is the only 3D authoring tool on the market which
will allow you do all of the above in real-time shared 3D collaborative
spaces where members of the design or animation team can maintain
real-time interaction from anywhere in the world.

We are taking the unprecedented step of making these tools available to
everyone for free in order to stimulate content creation for the present
and future online 3D environments, and so that any artist out there with a
dream can fulfill their vision without finding themselves trapped by
budget limitations. This is particularly true if their vision includes
emerging 3D online worlds, where free and unrestricted communities of web
artists can collaborate on 3D projects and even establish new kinds of
communities the likes of which the world has never seen before, way beyond
simple chats in isolated 3D rooms or 3D islands.

Above all, trueSpace7.6 will empower you to create anything you dream up,
whether you want to make illustrations for National Geographic, design
products for Rolls-Royce, create buildings for Virtual Earth, make
advertising or training videos, architectural walkthroughs, innovative
video games, or animated films. All of these possibilities are now open to
you simply by downloading trueSpace7.6 and learning what its powerful 3D
authoring tools can do for you!

To download trueSpace7.6, visit the link below:
http://cart1.caligari.com/web/Truespacemainreg.aspx

Also, to aid in your learning process we have made all of our video
courses, previously $79 each, available at no charge, and you can download
those courses here.

Another good way to learn is to join our active user community on our
forums: (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/index.php).

At a time when other companies are removing their low cost products to
make it even tougher to get started in 3D, it gives us great pleasure to
enable all artists regardless of age or income to create 3D in whatever
field they dream of. We hope you enjoy your copy of trueSpace7.6.

Thanks for the heads up Amon... downloading now...

Hows does this compare to Blender?

I was always put off by Truespace's mystery meat interface, but it looks like they have changed it a lot since I last played with it.

It has some really nice, easy to use modelling tools -- I think for rendering, though, Blender has become a very powerful package.

Great news, I'm sure it's better then Milkshape3D. I just wish I knew this was going to be free.. like.. months ago because Milkshape3D cost me about $45.

*Is waiting for Maya to become free* hehe

Thanks for the link. I've always enjoyed Truespace but haven't used it for years. Guess I'll have to look back into it.

@Amon: Thanks for the link. I was always flirting with Galigari products but never decided to proceed to a purchase.

Also note there are free video to explain how to work in Truespace, so am downloading that as well :)

Good call for the publisher

Cool, Thanks Amon!

Thanks for the heads up. I'm heading off there now...

Downloading...lets see if it is as bad as many make it out to be ;)

Its quite good - I do hope the interface has been changed though.

Hows does this compare to Blender?

Haven't used TS since v5.x and blender is MUCH better & more powerful than that.

I never really liked the TS interface, its not as intuitive as blenders IMO and it used to crash a lot. I still use v5 sometimes for testing meshes but thats about it. May take a look at 7 though, thanks for the headsup.

Truespace isn't intuitive, but blender too has a long way to go in that respect.

Overall Blender is much more advanced than Truespace, however you can't be as productive as you would with the commercial modellers is often compared to.

truespace is a bit slow to do stuff on my PC's
one of them is a dual core with intel gfx

WTF 23 year history, no way that he said that :D

Well, the first version was released in 1986. It's one of the elderlies, followed closely by Lightwave.

wow did this stuff even exist in 86? I remeber 93 and computers could barly show text on screen not to talk about any 3D graphics which really took off around 97-98 and so on

You're thinking in x86 terms ;)

Caligari was running on amigas waaaay back when.
That and lightwave is what made me buy an amiga after my atari ST.
Same with vue d'esprit btw.
While the x86 was still text based and struggling to run word perfect, the amiga was king of the hill. Good times.

You're thinking in x86 terms ;)

What you said. Although X86 DOS PCs could 3D render too and usually better/smoother than the Amiga on 286 or better.. (although the smoothness of 2d did not catch up till Pentium MMX!).
3D studio is well old (1-4, not MAX) and don't forget POV and Autocad. There was also lots of 3D games on DOS back then in the 80's too. MS Flight simulator, Carrier Command, Stunt car Racer, F29 retaliator, Driller...

Truespace isn't intuitive, but blender too has a long way to go in that respect.
Aww, it is! I find Blenders interface to be very intuitive. Its hard to get started but after that learning new things tends to follow a very similar logic, controls etc. I think its problem is that its not "windowsey" enough for a lot of people which puts them off.

tron and the last starfighter

and as for photoshopping some super computer type thing called the barco creator was in a photo mag where some photo/artist was showing some of his work, a nude woman with brick skin springs most to my mind and this was early 90's
but stalin proved you didnt need a computer to wipe out someone from a photograph (after wiping them out of existance)

Once I found a very interesting in-depth article about The Last Starfighter... considered the detail of the models, it's amazing to think that they modelled everything by adding vertexes one by one.

Tron had more impact for its visionary ideas (revisited exceptionally well in Tron 2.0), since the lightbike scene is not much in comparison except for the free camera movement.

Overall, The Last Starfighter was ahead of every other movie in relation to CG techniques: it featured full motion camera movement, pivoted objects, detailed models, texture mapping, and a great renderer, all done without photocompositing. Other movies will do the same things at least four years later.

Besides, it was one of those movies which look mesmerizing when you are a child. :)

EDIT: the article is gone for good, but fortunely I saved it... here it is!
Cinefantastique - January 1985 Article on The Last Starfighter

Thanks for the link!
I kind of like Truespace except it's not all that intuitive.
Gonna have to watch the videos.
So far I've managed to produce a hairy cube which is something
I've not done before nor really thought about doing. Great stuff.

DOG

It certainly seems a lot more stable than the previous versions.

I'm liking it so far...

"dont worry ill have it all sorted out by the time we reach the frontier"
console bleeps
"whats that?"
"the frontier"

class film

not seen it on DVD in hmv (or anywhere that sells 'old movies') must check their website

Downloading :)

Thanks a lot Amon! I'm also downloading the videos, see if I can get this thing in my head.

that might be messy ;)

Well, I like it more than Blender so far but there is no b3d exporter or have I missed something?

Thanks for the heads up, Heh 40 seconds to download it.

I love Blender all around except for one thing: Mind-bogglingly slow user interface. Was this interface written in interpreted BASIC running on a Commodore 64 emulator or what? I mean, it literally takes up to 5 seconds for things to happen when selected. I have a crappy gfx card, I'll admit, and the non-interface things seem to be reasonably fast, but damn! Thank goodness they have lots of keyboard short-cuts or I'd have to kill myself within 2 minutes of using it...

Anyone know of a really fast OpenGL card for less than $100? (I know about the FireGL cards, but they are like $300-$500!)

Odd. Its usually a lightning fast interface. If its slow when clicking on stuff then the only thing i can think of is that you have no OpenGL support at all or something is very very wrong. (My old duron 800 runs is faster than that)

Blender... Ati Radeon cards were really slow (1900... 2x00... 3xx0 series at least) until couple of months when Ati fixed their drivers. Selecting or picking was Ati's problem for while but they have fixed it mostly now.. Nvidia cards, even low cost ones have history to work very well with Blender.

About that truespace... using blender is piece of cake compared to this confusing "mess" of truespace.. :( I know, it's new program to me, will take hours and hours to learn.
