My Desktop PC Died...

My Desktop PC died about 3 days ago. The power supply failed and fried the gfx card and the motherboard. I think the ram is fried too.

I'm posting from my brothers PC atm.

I have £350 to buy a new PC with but want a cheapo laptop; priced between £300 - £370. I need it to work with BlitzMax and be capable of at least some basic 3d stuff.

What Laptop would you guys recommend? I live in the UK so only UK prices please.

I've checked out Toshiba and HP but I've heard people mention that Toshiba laptops are no good.

Any advice would be appreciated. :)

Fujitsu-Siemens laptops are usually the cheapest, but not the worst in quality. They can provide an amazing price/quality ratio when the price is low.

Alienware has probably the best laptops in the world, and Asus has somewhat good one's too but they are quite expensive, not as expensive as Sony's VAIO series though.

Lenovo ThinkPad T61p is also an interesting choice although it's probably meant to be an office laptop. It has a very good graphics card: nVidia FX 570M (it's almost as good as a GeForce 8800 GTS, and runs all modern OpenGL games (and of course all DirectX 9/10 games also, but I don't recommend to play those games)), and the price is lower than the Alienware's or Asus'.

Toshiba used to be the best in laptops, but nowadays they have only 1 good laptop, it was one special model of the Satellite series.

Acer laptops is a keep your hands away thing, they are slightly cheaper than quality laptops, but they are so horrible quality and break from every place they can and even more.

The only bad thing you can do when chosing laptops is to buy a laptop which has no nVidia card.

I just checked out the Lenovo T61p and it's way out my price range.

Alienware is a deffinate no, also, because of price.

I'm just looking for somthing that will run blitzmax, minib3d and a bit of TV3D.

If I were to push my budget I could probably push it to £400 for a laptop but that would be the maximum.

I simply cannot afford an expensive laptop or PC and even if I could I don't think I would buy the latest tech ever again. It's not worth it.

Anyway, I'll check out more lenovo laptops to see if there is a cheaper one. I've been looking at the HP ones also and they seem decent for their price range of £300 - £400.

..ill suggest if you can someohow manage, to buy decent laptop with more-less modern features and performance..I know it may be outside of budget, but for long term, you can loose invested money, having in mind that you looking for Bmax + TV3D to run with..if you can squeeze some juice to get decent one it will be ok, rather than invest again in to same thing because low end you looking for will be obsolete soon, regarding fact that you want it for 3D too..thats just suggestion..

I can't spend anymore than £400 on the laptop. It's the budget atm as it's all I have. Even £400 is pushing it a bit. I know what you mean though about investing in a decent laptop but my cash situation doesn't permit that.

I've had my Desktop PC for nearly 3 and a bit years. Rather than spending money to replace faulty parts I thought I'd be best investing it in a new laptop. Plus my Desktop PC used up a lot of electric and was loud.

Toshiba notebooks are good in my experience, only Toshiba the company and their driver support for consumer notebooks sucks -- they will only support the OS that came with the notebook, meaning that if your notebook comes with Vista and tomorrow Windows 7 is released, you won't get drivers for it. At least that's the experience that I made with my old Satellite 2710, maybe it's better now.

interesting. What is your pc spec? I had my new pc for one year when come to this october and I havnt even overclock it yet because to do that, I need freezer to put on the CPU if I want to overclock it I think.

My pc spec are E6750 with 2GB Ram and Geforce 8800GTS 640MB

From what I read your first post, if the PSU died first then the rest to follow will died. is that correct?

Dont be tempted by packard bell. They are a nightmare. F.Seimens are alright (ive got one), i wouldnt be recommending it if you had more cash though.

Make sure what ever you get has a decent GPU (ati/nvidia) as Intel suck!

are you shure that all that parts are died?

how do you arrive at this diagnostic?

Do you have, another pc to interchange parts, to see what level of dammage actually have?
