So I was looking through my files of games on my computer, when I realized, I have no fps games. So now I am trying to figure out what one I want to get. Any suggestions? I'm not really all that informed about diffrent fpses pros and cons, any help would be nice.

Agreed. If you only own one FPS, it should be Half Life 2. It has fairly modest system requirements too, which is nice.
Meh, I didn't care much for HL2. Seemed pretty generic but with quite nice environments and so so story. Having said that I got bored half way through and never bothered to finish it. Didn't like the beginning of episode 1, and haven't tried 2.

I'd suggest playing Deus Ex. Best game ever, it simply is. Great plot, great gameplay, great detail in the gameplay. You can play that game over and over again (my friend has played it over 24 times).

half life 2 - not only for the one player game, but also for the online multi-player as well
Terry B, probably should decide whether you think you would like a more tactical, or story driven arcade style FPS.
HL2 falls more in the story based FPS with pretty simple controls and gameplay matched with nice physics.
Tactical games try to have better AI and have a slower pace, more to do with stealth, tactics and realism, sometimes squad based or with more emphasis on skills like diversions and sniping.

I found COD2 more exciting than HL2. At least you could shoot from cover.
I liked FEAR. Sure, the endless "office cubicles and mechs" stuff became a little tiresome, but I enjoyed the fusion of western FPS and J-Horror sensibilities. I only play games to experience immersive or otherwise interesting stories, themes and settings. Gameplay isn't very important to me.
Deus Ex was also pretty good. Same goes for Thief 2.

HL1 (there are also some good Addons like Opposing Force, Blue Shift), HL2 (The main game is brilliant. For what it is, maybe the best FPS till today, E1 is not this good, E2 is better again), DOOM3, Far Cry, System Shock1+2, NOLF1+2, Red Faction, Bioshock and there was one of those Star Trek shooters which had one very nice designed level on a space ship but i can't remember which one it was.
Other well known series like Deus Ex, Unreal, HALO, Star Trek, FEAR, Stalker, Serious Sam and so on weren't so much fun for me to play.

I love the Chernobyl episode in Call of Duty 4 -- extremely dense atmosphere; it's like a realistic version of STALKER without mutants.
The Half-Life franchise as a whole is by far the best story-driven FPS series on the market. It's a must-have/must-play. If you're only buying one FPS game, this is it.
F.E.A.R. was a good one. I also liked FarCry (but I cannot recommend Crysis; it's not more than a FarCry-rip off with enhanced graphics on compatible hardware).
I also enjoyed BioShock, Blacksite and The Darkness a lot (in that order).

Call of Duty 4 is awesome. If you want some cinematic action and a very good optimized game which can work on a 8 years old computer it is the game you should get.

FEAR was good mainly due to the AI and particle FX making the game much more immersive. Shame all the bad guys were mostly clones and you got to fight maybe 3 identical guys a few thousand times.
I thought the first part of Crysis was Far Cry on steroids and excellent, one of the best but I couldn't be bothered to play it past fighting the Koreans. You can get most of the experience from the demo.
Stalker was cool, quite RPGish but I found sticking to a schedule a bit annoying, mostly because I enjoy taking my time and um, stalking prey. And my pace often meant that I missed deadlines for small overlapping missions.
MOHA Airborne I enjoyed this one quite a bit, has gears of war cover, and you parachute in at the start of the level, so you can pick your own starting point. I like sniping and parachuting onto a tower or tall building and picking off the bad guys, and sneaking around on roofs was great fun.
The Brother in arms series was pretty cool, squad based where you command your men in a almost RTS type way, and can shout out various cover and suppression orders. The cool thing is the enemy can do the same, and will also try flanking manouvers, changing tactics depending on what your squad is trying to do.
A bit old now, But Riddick was amazing on the Xbox and is avaliable on PC too. Blew away far cry and Doom3 (was released around the same time). One of my favourite SP story based FPS of all time.

I recently purchased Prey for about £4, it's enjoyable enough, but a bit repetitive, not worth the full price, I did play it to the end though.

Quake III is all you need for crazy action :)
If you're looking for a half decent story, then I recommend Soldier of Fortune. it's got terrorists before terrorists were vogue :P
These are both oldies, so you might have trouble finding them...
I agree with the people who said HL2 is good. Although avoid anything particularly modern - seems that these days the FPS genre has been diluted into a watery piss that isn't very nice.

I vote HL2 also. Get steam and the orange box and you'll be good for quite awhile.

COD4 was my favorite besides Halo 3 this year.
Bioshock is excellent. Graphics good enough to make you stop and stare, a brilliant story and extremely atmospheric. The only real let down is that the shotgun didn't rock.
I also loved return to Castle Wolfenstein, although it's a few years old now so I don't know how the graphics pan out against modern ones.

Delta Force 1-6, Crysis 1, Unreal 1, Quake 1, HL2, Bioshock, System Shock 1-2.
Those are a must to have for every FPS gamer.
